Summary

A group's train journey from Amsterdam to Brugge is marked by a mishap where one member, Kiryn, is left behind on the platform, leading to a series of delays and a detour back to Amsterdam.

Abstract

The narrative describes a group's train trip from Amsterdam to Brugge, beginning with a breakfast in Amsterdam. The group of five, minus Kiryn who remains on the platform, boards the 10.53 train to Antwerp. Kiryn's mother, who is on the train, assumes Kiryn is as well. The mistake is realized when Kiryn is not found on board, prompting Lorelle to return to Amsterdam to retrieve Kiryn and her ticket. The group endures a tight connection at Antwerp's grand station, requiring a swift ascent through multiple escalators to catch their onward train to Brugge, highlighting the necessity of the 20-minute platform transfer time.

Opinions

  • The author implies a humorous tone regarding the mishap, emphasizing the irony of Kiryn's mother's punctuality and the assumption that Kiryn was on the train.
  • There is a subtle critique of the complexity of train station navigation, as indicated by the need for a significant amount of time to transfer between platforms at Antwerp station.
  • The incident with Kiryn being left behind suggests a potential oversight in the group's planning or the train staff's oversight.

Our first mishap

After a delicious breakfast of apple pancake, orange juice and coffee, we caught the 10.53 train to Antwerp. Well, four of us were on the train to Antwerp but Kiryn was left standing on the platform.

She was sure her mum wasn’t on the train, which of course, she was — right up front. She should have known her mum has never missed anything in her life, nor ever been late! She’s not me!

Lorelle had to disembark at the first stop and travel back to Amsterdam, as Kiryn didn’t have the ticket. We changed trains at Antwerp, a big, beautiful station. Arriving on the lowest level, there were four or five escalators to the platform 5 departure for Brugge. Now we know why they leave 20 minutes to get from one platform to another!
