Americans Have Privilege — You Don’t Have to Remind Us ALL The Time
The white saviors are on their soapbox again.
I get it.
America is a boujee country.
Sing me a different song.
Yes, we’re entitled scumbags that think every immigrant who comes here has to speak English and we stick them in cages if they don’t. We’re imperialistic like no one’s business. Heck, I’m the first one to say America only cares about money (as a lower-middle-class person).
We are crappy.
But the problem comes when people from other countries or the white saviors constantly remind Americans about how this country has no morals. As a Black woman, I’ve had my fair share of American-hater episodes where I uttered a million times “I hate this country” without recognizing the privilege I have living here.
However, there’s a clear difference between getting someone to acknowledge their privilege and just being annoyed by their presence.
No one’s allowed to roast my country except for me.
Everyone should worry about their own country.
Sure, there is a slew of problems every country should work out together. But I don’t need someone who’s not even American, telling me how stuck-up of a country it is when I live this every day. It’s in my face.
What people don’t realize is that there are Black people and other minorities here too. Even though we live in a country with privilege, that privilege doesn’t trickle down to EVERY American. We’re not all drinking out of a chocolate fountain over here.
I’m very aware we have problems here and trust me, we’re all doing our best to fix them. You don’t have to stomp on us when we’re down. This is a work in progress.
I don’t understand how the “make Americans recognize their privilege” train turned into this belittling to make other countries seem like they have a higher moral ground or that they're more caring with immigrants, but as the great Nene Leakes once said, “It’s getting weird.” It doesn’t solve anything talking crap about one country just because it’s at the top economically.
That’s not my fault.
Here’s my philosophy: Every country has demons, but working within our own respective countries to solve it works wonders rather than saying America is privileged all the time.
Please don’t dismiss minority issues just because we live in America (especially Black people).
Sometimes I feel like it’s a double-edged sword when it comes to being an African-American.
Other Americans hate us because we’re Black and people from other countries hate us because we’re American. It’s bullcrap. Sure, America is center-stage for everything, but that’s not our fault.
Newsflash: We were brought over here against our will.
If you want to hate on America then hate on “White America”, the rest of us are just victims of the circumstances. Didn’t we just have a bunch of protests against police brutality here a few months ago?
During that time period, I saw a Black woman getting whacked in the head with a skateboard, another Black woman getting thrown in a dumpster, and a Black man getting killed by a cop slowly as he struggled for air. I could give you a whole 100-page essay of issues we have in our country just concerning race. Don’t make me get into all of the other problems.
Please be mindful of that when you talk about all Americans.
What shame is there in being proud of where you come from?
I swear I’m not a Trump supporter.
I’m not one of those people that yells about how amazing America is and how I’m a prrroud American (*White trash voice*)! But am I supposed to be ashamed that I was born and raised in Ohio? Hell no.
Just like how immigrants come over here wave the flag of their country and integrate their culture into everything they do, that’s how I feel about where I’m from. Yes, I talked previously about America’s horrendous history of slavery, but I can’t sit in my room feeling sorry for myself every day. I can’t live my life like that.
I’m a proud Ohioan who eats chili on top of their spaghetti (state tradition and it’s really good), goes to Red’s games, and visits the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame every now and then.
fewwwwww.
I’ve been holding that back for a while. But just know that there are rich cultures in America. It varies widely across each state. We all have very diverse opinions and come from different upbringings.
You can be mad at America as much as you want, but I’m never going to denounce where I was born and raised (unless they do some f**ked up stuff again).
Final Thoughts
I don’t want you to leave this article thinking that I’m saying Americans don’t have privilege because that’s not the case at all.
All I’m saying is that we already know that. There’s no use in saying it a million times over. There are other Americans who don’t even feel like Americans because of how they are treated here. America is too diverse for all of us to be put in one box.
Everyone should just focus on their own country and their own needs, understand the struggles of minorities in different countries, and be proud of their heritage.
Maybe then, we could be a world united.
