Summary

The article reflects on the global impact and perception of the 2020 American elections, with a focus on the UK perspective and the influence on everyday family discussions.

Abstract

The 2020 American elections have captured the attention of the world, including a family in the UK's Midlands, who have found their dinner table conversations dominated by the political drama unfolding across the Atlantic. The global media, including the BBC, has been engrossed in covering the elections, highlighting the intense interest and the complexity of the political situation. The article suggests that even children are aware of and have opinions on the political tactics used by President Trump, drawing parallels between schoolyard politics and the international stage. The family's view of the Trump administration is critical, particularly regarding its handling of racial issues, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the use of inflammatory rhetoric, which they believe presents a negative image of the USA to the international community.

Opinions

  • The family is surprised by the extent to which American politics, specifically the 2020 elections, have permeated their daily lives and discussions.
  • There is a sense of disbelief and criticism towards President Trump's stance on legal challenges post-election, seen as hypocritical and akin to childish behavior.
  • The Trump administration's response to the pandemic and racial tensions is viewed negatively, with the family perceiving a lack of effective leadership and an inability to manage crises responsibly.
  • The article conveys a sentiment that the U.S. is not setting a positive example for the world, with its internal political dynamics and actions being seen as regressive rather than progressive.
  • The use of the term "Chinese virus" is criticized for promoting xenophobia and detracting from the global effort to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

How our world sees it

We are an average family living in the midlands of United Kingdom. Our dining table discussions have hardly tasted any spice other than the school politics but this week things have been very different.

Even BBC News has run out of metaphors to explain the 2020 elections in the USA. The whole world seems to be talking about these elections from media headlines to kids discussions every news involves Trump and Joe Biden.

Even the kids Understand

I was speechless when my daughter explained how silly it was that President Trump said he was ready to go to the courts only if he lost, does that mean everything would be fair only if he won?

Mom, don’t you think he is acting like Ibi ( her little brother), she questioned?

This made me wonder, have my kids grown up suddenly, discussing world politics or did American politics just come down to the level of school politics?

Trump Administration

Recently we haven’t been impressed by any news coming from America whether it is shooting of innocent people because of their race and colour or handling of the pandemic. Trump administration seems to have crumbled at all levels.

For pandemic, they blame China for spreading it in the world, but China has got it all under control now whereas Americans are still calling it Chinese virus and letting it spread like fire. The protests and the election rallies are all giving the virus a warm welcome over and over again.

These are simple things understood by the general public even kids for that matter.

All I can say is that this is not portraying a decent picture of the USA to the rest of the world!
