Amazon Prime Video to Introduce Ads: What You Need to Know
The Announcement has received criticism and backlash from Amazon Prime Video Users
The ads, the company said, “will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time.”
If you are an Amazon Prime Video user, get ready to see ads on movies and TV shows starting next month. Prime will include ads beginning on Jan. 29, the company said in an email to U.S. members this week, setting a date for an announcement it made back in September.
Prime members who want to keep their movies and TV shows ad-free will have to pay an additional $2.99.
Amazon is also planning to include advertisements in its Prime service in the United Kingdom and other European countries, as well as Canada, Mexico, and Australia next year. The tech giant follows other major streaming services — such as Netflix and Disney — who have embraced a dual model that allows them to earn revenue from ads and also offer subscribers the option to opt out with a higher fee.
Amazon said in its email that it will “aim to have meaningfully fewer ads” than traditional TV and other streaming providers. The ads, the company said, “will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time.”
How much will Prime Video cost without ads?
The service currently costs $9 per month, so the ad-free version would seemingly cost about $12 per month. But the video service is included in an Amazon Prime subscription, which carries the company’s two-day shipping deals at $15 per month or $139 per year. It isn’t clear how the pricing will work in other countries.
Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, Peacock, and Max sell subscriptions with ads, The Washington Post has reported. The offerings are much less than the ad-free versions. Netflix with ads costs $6.99 a month in the United States, while the cheapest monthly Netflix subscription without ads is more than double the cost at $15.49.
Customer Backlash
After Amazon announced that Prime Video will start showing ads with its content on January 29, 2024 — as well as become more expensive — there has been strong backlash online.
When a plethora of streaming services first entered the market, they offered free trials in abundance and had incredibly low monthly fees.
