Once upon a time, there were two siblings who lived by the sea. The youngest never knew his parents while the eldest only harbored vague memories of their mother and none at all of the fisherman father who’d spent most of her life at sea and who must have met his end out there among the raging storm swells. She found herself a parent before she’d even become a woman, and raised her little brother alone in their shack by the gray and lonely beach. She taught him to fish from the cliffs high above the frothy sea-foam, with lengths of twine and old needles stuck through scraps of clothing, and she dreaded the day that it might occur to the boy that he’d catch better fish with a boat and net. It was for this reason that she began to dive for pearls.
Kiku learned a little from the women in the neighboring village and much more from her own nightly plunges across the overhang and into the cold black depths below. By the age of two and twenty, she’d become as familiar a figure in the market as any of those elderly ama divers, celebrated by those who knew her and a rumor to those distant sailors who knew only that a beautiful apparition, naked save for the white headscarf wrapped about her long black hair, appeared atop the sea cliffs each morning to leap and vanish beneath the waves.
The fishermen soon found their way to that secluded shore, searching at first for that lovely phantom and then for the flesh-and-blood woman who could give rise to such wondrous stories. Many of them sought her as a lover. A few offered to make her a wife, but for the sake of her brother Ren, still but a child, she scorned their dubious promises. And so the men had to content themselves with watching her from across the sea, with gazing over her pale cheeks and plump ruby lips, with stolen glimpses of the ripe swell of her breasts and the lush black curls hidden between her bare hips and slender thighs. They ducked beneath the railing whenever her dark eyes happened to glance their way, and some began to insist she was a sea spirit after all.
Those boatmen weren’t the only ones to take in the sight of her disrobed form. Other eyes gazed upon her with no less fervor from the churning water below the cliffs, a perfect symmetry with those that stared at her from the distant ships. They watched and waited…
She may have been a pearl diver, but in truth, her daily harvest consisted mostly of shelled abalones and the occasional lobster. One bright summer morning, however, she spied a glimmer in the deep and dove down to find the Dragon King’s palace shining in the abyss, and a pearl as large as a persimmon fruit. She snatched the jewel from its shell without a thought, but it wasn’t hers to take. The Dragon King’s guard, a monstrous beast with eight writhing arms followed close behind by another inky shadow, gave eager chase. Their waiting had finally ended.
