Alt text (alternate text) is often overlooked — here’s why it’s useful.

Aid visually impaired

Alt text describes what is in the picture for those with impaired vision. Computers can read the photo description (alt text) out loud to visually impaired readers.

Security Safeguard

Downloads can carry malware. Many people turn off image downloads in their email as a safeguard. If someone sets their email as “do not download” photos, they will see your alt text instead.

To add alt text in Medium

Click on the image so it has a green box around it. Click “Alt text” on the pop-up menu bar. Describe the photo. To boost your chance of your post being found by Google search engines, include the keyword for your post when it makes sense.
