Alone You Can Make a Difference, United We Can Transform

The earth needs us now or never

Recently, I came across a prediction made by the late physicist, Stephen Hawking — we will need to leave the earth in the next 100 years. Due to climate change, population growth, diseases and epidemics, and possible asteroid annihilation.

It makes me think at least it will happen after I am gone, unless — God willing, I live that long.

But what about my children and their future. What sort of life will they see and live? I deliberate on whether it is best to counsel them not to have children of their own. What an unfortunate time and circumstance! Depriving them of that gift. That blessing. To reach that moment staved of choice, that which we so graciously conceded. I bear a heavy heart. But, this makes me more grateful for the now. The present.

The Reality is

We take so much time and effort in bettering ourselves.

➰Mentally we look to meditate, do yoga, and be mindful.

➰Physically we exercise, take care of our skin and hair, and spend tons of time and money shopping to look good.

➰Financially we save and invest money to make more money.

➰Professionally we learn new skills, upgrade our qualifications, take new courses, and network with others.

Are we doing enough individually to heal the earth? Are we investing our time and money in making decisions and giving back, to that which has provided bountifully?

There is Hope

Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist and TIME’s Person of the Year 2019, is fighting for her generation. She is raising the alarm louder and more frequent than any other environmentalist, despite her small stature. Why has the reality of climate change affected her in such a way but left our moral compass lacking?

What can you do?

What can one person do to make a difference? Greta was one person, now she is a force to reckon. She is not the voice of reason, but our conscience, bringing us face to face with our carelessness, our greed, our selfishness, our denial.

According to The World Counts, the state of the planet shows — The world could run out of rain forests in 2100, food in 2050, fish in 2048, water in 2040… stark numbers.

I ask myself the above question many times. I am a vegetarian. I am proud that I don’t eat meat and help reduce carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses. But what I didn’t mention is that I was born a vegetarian. Would I have stopped eating meat if I wasn’t? Is it that clean-cut? Can we all make the changes we need to, to make a difference? The numbers alone will motivate us to start.

Many questions. I believe the answer to all of them, a resounding yes. We can always do more! There are countless little ways to help save our planet: saving water, reducing waste, switching off the lights, choosing eco-friendly products, limit eating meat, and advocating for our earth.

This choice we do have.
