Jimmy Webb is one of the greatest songwriters ever. Impulsive and emotional, he says, “Whatever was going on inside me would bubble out of the piano and onto paper.”

Bubble! Never dribble! Not a word or three at a time, to be drawn like blood from a stone. He inspires a pantsy like me — who hears the words throbbing in my heart and veins before I can get a pen in hand.

McArthur Park is the story of his broken heart, as is By the Time I Get To Phoenix. When a master answers a challenge, we stand in awe.
