All The Evidence We Need… Way Too Late

The watershed moment comes too far into the drought

If you’re like me, you’ve been waiting for the smoking gun to finally be discovered. That piece of evidence that would doom Donald J. Trump to impeachment and removal from office and incarceration. That document or video or photograph that just cannot be refuted.

And again, if you’re like me, you’ve gotten your hopes up time and time again. These pieces of evidence emerge, and you think “Yes! Here we go!” Only to have the Trump Machine explain them away in flimsy and completely transparent, yet somehow effective, ways.

Then you see Trump himself add fuel to the fire by doing batshit crazy things like having his brother’s funeral at the White House or promoting unverified treatments or arranging to have his entire family paid exorbitant speaker fees for the RNC. (I don’t have documentation on that last one, but I’d be willing to wager we’ll hear something about that eventually.)

And yet he persists.

Now, there are books and documentaries and tax returns and all kinds of other things on the horizon that would be the answer to our hopes and prayers. If they weren’t already way too late.

There are three reasons why Trump really could shoot someone dead in the middle of Times Square and get away with it, and why there is a very real danger of him getting re-elected.

The first is the aforementioned Trump Machine. There is a host of ever changing people who are constantly churning out excuses and distractions and lies to justify or obfuscate Trump’s nefarious deeds. They are not particularly good at coming up with plausible arguments, but they make up in quantity what they lack in quality. The constant noise they generate is enough to distract and confuse us until the next Absolutely Unacceptable Action comes along for us to focus on and leave the previous Disgusting Behavior behind, forgotten and unresolved.

The second is the normalization of Trump’s behavior and the behavior of everyone around him. No one tells President Dumpster Fire “no,” and there is no way to start doing so now. Many in the federal government have proven cowards when it comes to holding him accountable, and the system has proven woefully incapable of stopping someone who chooses not to follow the unwritten rules and codes of conduct (and even some of the written ones). If it were just Trump maybe it wouldn’t be so frustrating, but his behavior has enabled and emboldened an army of prejudiced self-serving opportunists, and the prevalence of this deplorable behavior has made it more acceptable at all levels of our society.

The third, and probably most dangerous, is that the people who have supported Trump and continue to support Trump because they are uninformed or misinformed will continue to be uninformed or misinformed. Many of us have gotten used to doing the necessary research to ensure that the information we are getting is not skewed or slanted or outright false. We take a couple of extra moments to Google a topic or check Snopes or otherwise vet the information coming to us, so that we don’t assume what we hear is true. Many Trump supporters are perfectly comfortable taking him and his administration (and Fox news on days when he’s not mad at them) at face value. They do not and will not put forth the effort to check and see if what they are hearing is really true, because at the end of the day they’ve made up their minds and can’t be bothered with the facts. Compounding this is the fact that many of them have been convinced that credible sources of information are “fake news” because they go against the Trump Machine’s propaganda. So all the books and documentaries and lawsuits on the horizon have very little chance of actually swaying any of these folks.

The polls tells us Trump is probably not going to win. However, looking at the three factors above, you can see how the cards are really stacked in his favor.

He can and will continue to lie, cheat, and steal through Election Day and beyond. He will continue to discredit and hobble the USPS and scream about voter fraud so that if he loses he has established a reason to contest the outcome (like he contests everything that doesn’t go in his favor), and there is a very real chance that his bullshit nonsense arguments will be taken seriously.

His opposition is armed only with the truth, and the truth has proven an ineffective weapon against Trump and those who support him.

I believe there is much more at stake in the coming election that just whether Trump gets four more years to kill off citizens. The very soul of our country hangs in the balance.
