All Great Writers Have to Write Poetry
No matter what your niche is.
2017 — I wrote poetry.
2018 — I became addicted to poetry.
2019 — Did it a little bit.
2020 — Complete stop.
My poetry journey’s been up and down four years straight. I still love it. But I set my sights on different writing goals.
I changed from a prolific poet to a relentless writer. Whatever that means.
I wrote poetry a few days ago. I felt more rejuvenated than a lizard growing back it’s limbs.
Why did I do this?
Poetry is something everyone needs to dabble in — even if you don’t want to be a poet. Here’s why.
You need an emotional outlet.
I had to kill my love of poetry ever since I started blogging more.
Something in the back of my mind told me, “If you write poetry, you’re not a real writer”. Why?
Because poetry is short. I heard the secret to becoming a successful writer is writing like hell. So I had to ditch my daily poetry sessions for three-minute self-improvement articles. Zzzzzz…
So far I’ve been writing longer self-help articles every day for five months straight — no poetry. My emotions have been bubbling up like a volcano these past few months — still no poetry.
I couldn’t take the stress anymore so I decided to write a poem — finally.
Who knew a poem would be enough to give me therapy? All of my past aggressions went away in that one-minute poem. It gave me a way to voice how I feel without pandering to the reader.
Take a break from self-help articles sometimes and write a poem. You need to write straight from the heart every once in a while without the need of helping someone else.
Stop thinking that “real” bloggers don’t write poetry.
Like what’s the sentiment behind that?
I know blogging is a different ball game compared to poetry. You have to practice making your articles to help other people. You need to write longer content to practice your writing muscle more.
But is one poem that horrible? I’ve seen prolific bloggers I follow now write poetry. In short, poetry won’t kill your writing career.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a poet out there making six figures a year from it. Anyone can.
Don’t limit your writing to one type. Writing is beyond versatile. You pick any genre, subgenre, sub-subgenre, etc.
The biggest skill of any blogger is having the ability to emote. Poetry is the best writing avenue for that.
So yes, “real” writers write poetry.
Final Thoughts
Poetry is beautiful.
I had to suppress my love for it since I’m going in a different direction now. However, that doesn’t mean poetry should be shut out of my life forever.
Poetry allows you to let out your raw emotions in a minute and the writers you love dabble in it too. You don’t have to be a self-improvement writer to be a “real” writer.
You’re a poet first. So pick up that pencil and start emoting.
