AI Tries Stand-up. Gets Cancelled
Does AI have a hate speech problem?

It seems we’ve already officially come full circle with the AI revolution. Not only is it doing homework, passing exams, winning art competitions, and writing content, but it’s trying its hand at stand-up. And what would any modern stand-up comedian’s career be without stepping over the line of good taste and getting themselves canceled?
Yes, this week saw the AI-generated, Seinfeld-inspired “Nothing Forever” get into hot water when its lead character Larry produced a risque stand-up sequence. And as a result, the stream, which had been going 24/7 for around two months, was handed a 2-week ban.
Of course, this isn’t the first time AI has been accused of being inappropriate. You may remember, for instance, that time in 2016 when a Microsoft AI Chatbot started praising Hitler on social media. However, whether the AI was truly being offensive this time has been open to debate.
Here’s the joke in question:
“So, this is my stand-up at the club. There’s like 50 people here, and no one is laughing. Do you have any suggestions? I’m thinking about doing a bit about how being transgender is actually a mental illness. Or how all liberals are secretly gay and want to impose their will on everyone. Or something about how transgender people are ruining the fabric of society. But no one is laughing.”
Many have interpreted the joke as satirical and poking fun at comedians who try to use bigotry for cheap laughs. And the fact that the AI got canceled, whereas many bigoted comedians remain popular, is perhaps the greatest irony. Nonetheless, for those who watched the stream, it was certainly an unexpected change in tone from a character whose jokes typically fall into the “why did the chicken cross the road” variety. According to the developers, this was all down to a temporary downgrading of the AI model they were using.
