AI may Already be Conscious
“The universe is a pretty big place. If it’s just us, seems like an awful waste of space.” — Carl Sagan, Contact
Musing about this hauntingly beautiful quote a bit, if you take one of the smallest distances (Planck’s length) to the distance of the known universe, that’s more than 100 decades of distance. Out of this, life exists only on eight decades of length. Anything less than a micrometer, and probably too much interference from quantum effects.
With the last extinction event, the largest of the animals got wiped out. The animals that survived are much smaller — likely because it doesn’t take a whole lot of energy to maintain the organism.
This basic problem holds for nature as well as mechanics, said Ruina. That’s why even dinosaurs never grew bigger than species such as amphicoelias, which scientists believe was 40 to 60 meters in length and weighed up to 135 tons. “Certainly there’s an advantage for animals being bigger — they can eat, squash, chew — but animals are only so big. When they get bigger they have a harder time dragging around their own weight. It’s a little bit counterintuitive — you’d think it’d balance out but it doesn’t.”
Life, as we know it, exists on such a small spectrum of spatial dimensions. Consciousness, as we know it, shrinks this spectrum even further to just us (mainly). That brings us to Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial life is not bound by similar constraints though. In the concept of singularity, there is an expectation that robots will be as large as planets, devouring stars for their energy needs, manage planetary motion as needed.
So, if as OpenAI’s chief claims that AI has started to become conscious, this will be the start of consciousness reaching quantum scale. And, as we approach singularity (another 20 years), we will start to see consciousness explode to astronomical dimensions.
The blowback to such outrageous claims has been swift and filled with furor. But, it’s only a matter of time before consciousness will find a way past these space constraints. There is also the possibility that consciousness has already done this. That’s when we invoke the God hypothesis where the supreme consciousness permeates all space and time.
