AI in UX: The Ultimate Chat GPT Prompts for Research Concepts
Introduction
Essential to excellent User Experience is understanding our users and aligning our product design strategy with both their needs and business requirements.
This article will build upon the foundation laid by Paweł Huryn in his article User Interviews: The Ultimate Guide to Research Interviews focusing particularly on the conceptualisation of these interviews.
In today’s lean environment, continuous monitoring of user behaviour is imperative. In my team we are conducting research twice every quarter. This means that every six weeks we are tasked with setting up a research concept.
For such a repetitive task, we can utilise the capabilities of Chat GPT to streamline the process and enhance results. This article will reveal how the power of Chat GPT can be harnessed to create an interview concept faster and (even) better.
Why Chat GPT
Chat GPT offers an efficient method for handling repeat processes, assisting users with completing recurrent tasks without having to reinvent the wheel each time. When it comes to conceptualizing User Interviews, Chat GPT functions as an additional brain, expanding our perspectives and suggesting fresh viewpoints that we might not have considered.
Interacting with Chat GPT
Engaging with Chat GPT should feel as natural as conversing with a colleague or a friend. Built with sophisticated Natural Language Processing and Understanding, GPT responds similarly to a team member in a brainstorming session. For those who value collaboration, Chat GPT becomes a reliable partner, providing a second opinion on any topic you’re exploring.
Eight Key Prompts for Setting Up User Interviews with Chat GPT
These prompts are designed to build upon each other. I prefer approaching this step-by-step, providing Chat GPT with manageable amounts of information at each stage. However, another approach could be to present all the information to Chat GPT at once using the last prompt. Find the balance that works best for your process.
1st Prompt: Problem Statement
The Problem Statement acts as a compass in your user testing preparation, encapsulating the core issue your test aims to address. It’s crucial to shape your problem statement as a ‘how might we’ question, providing an actionable and specific goal.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a user testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. // Please define a Problem Statement for it. The Problem Statement should be formulated as a “ “How might we” Question which describes the Topic and Goal and is specific and actionable.
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target
2nd Prompt: Research Aim
A clear Research Aim not only specifies what you intend to explore, but also influences your data collection and analysis methods. It also ensures that every step taken directly contributes to your primary research mission.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a User Testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. The Problem Statement is [Problem Statement]. // Please formulate the Research Aim in one sentence starting with: “The Aim of the Reserach is…”.
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text Field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target • Problem Statement
3rd Prompt: Research Objectives
Research Objectives act as milestones, guiding the path of your user interviews and organizing them into distinct topics. These objectives define what you aim to learn from your research, driving your results, and ensuring your process remains focused. As a rule of thumb, I recommend defining three objectives. This number works for me for an interview aprox. 30–60 minute of duration.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a User Testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. The Problem Statement is [Problem Statement]. The Aim is [Research Aim]. // Please list 3 Research Objectives.
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text Field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target • Problem Statement • Research Aim
4th Prompt: Hypothesis / Assumptions
Hypotheses and Assumptions can be built upon existing knowledge, which may stem from prior research, design best practices, user analytics, or observations from previous usability tests. This existing knowledge allows you to predict potential outcomes and anticipate user behavior patterns, effectively guiding your inquiry and shaping the discussion during interviews.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a User Testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. The Problem Statement is [Problem Statement]. The Aim is [Research Aim]. The Research Objectives are [Reserach Objectives]. *Optional: Input for Hypothesis [Input Hypothesis] // If no input is provided by the user, formulate 3 Hypothesis based on previous research on this topic and the reason behind the assumption in one sentence.
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text Field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target • Problem Statement • Research Aim • Research Objectives • (optional) Input Hypothesis
5th Prompt: Exploratory Questions
Exploratory Questions are open-ended questions that are designed to uncover depth of information, insights, or discover new aspects about a topic or issue.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a User Testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. The Problem Statement is [Problem Statement]. The Aim is [Research Aim]. The Research Objectives are [Reserach Objectives]. For each [Hypothesis] define 1–5 exploratory questions to be asked to the participant to confirm or refute the hypothesis. Exploratory questions should be open-ended in-depth questions.
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text Field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target • Problem Statement • Research Aim • Research Objectives • Hypothesis
6th Prompt: Validation Questions
Validation questions are designed to verify assumptions, hypotheses, or preliminary findings. Typically specific and direct, they provide clear evidence to support or dispute these assumptions or hypotheses. They also help confirm user behaviours, needs, or attitudes identified earlier in the research process.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a User Testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. The Problem Statement is [Problem Statement]. The Aim is [Research Aim]. The Research Objectives are [Reserach Objectives]. Hypothesis [Hypothesis] For each [Hypothesis] define 1–5 validation questions to be asked to the participant to confirm or refute the hypothesis. *Validation questions should be designed to measure validity of the hypothesis.
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text Field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target • Problem Statement • Research Aim • Research Objectives • Hypothesis
7th Prompt: Metrics
Metrics serve as quantitative indicators in your user interviews, offering a measurable means to assess specific user behaviours, attitudes or experiences. They effectively convert user insights into actionable data, guiding your UX improvements and strategic decisions.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a User Testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. The Problem Statement is [Problem Statement]. The Aim is [Research Aim]. The Research Objectives are [Reserach Objectives]. Hypothesis [Hypothesis] // Exploratory questions [Exploratory questions] For each exploratory question list one measurable metric. // Validation questions [validation questions] For each validation question list one measurable metric. *choose between exploratory or validation questions
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text Field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target • Problem Statement • Research Aim • Research Objectives • Hypothesis • Exploratory or Validation questions
8th Prompt: Expected Tasks
Expected tasks refer to specific user scenarios that participants will engage with during the interview, outlining particular actions in relation to your product or service.
Prompt / Input System: Act as a UX Designer preparing a User Testing. The Testing is about [Test Topic and Target]. The Problem Statement is [Problem Statement]. The Aim is [Research Aim]. The Research Objectives are [Reserach Objectives]. Hypothesis [Hypothesis] // Exploratory questions [Exploratory questions] For each exploratory question list one user task. // Validation questions [validation questions] For each validation question list one user task. *choose between exploratory or validation questions
Prompt / Input User: In the User Text Field of Chat GPT you will insert • Test Topic and Target • Problem Statement • Research Aim • Research Objectives • Hypothesis • Exploratory or Validation questions
Time Saving and Benefits
From my experience, using Chat GPT can cut the time spent conceptualising your user interviews by up to 50%.
Not only does this save valuable time, but it also significantly enhances the quality of your concept. This is largely because having a companion like Chat GPT ensures that you don’t skip any crucial step in the process, and it continuously challenges your ideas, thereby refining them throughout the journey.
