AI Image How-To — #27
How to colorize a black-and-white image! — secrets revealed!

All of these images were created using Midjourney V5. And they turned out AWESOME!
The journey for this article began when I saw an image of a black and white picture with a pop of color. My stubborn, creative brain thought, “I want to learn to do this!”
The image below was not my first image creation, but it was the easiest by far. (The last image was my first project.)
Midjourney must love puppies too!
I went through A LOT of trial and error, recording the prompt, more trial and error, and infinite stubborn patience to learn this for you!
One of the main points I learned was to list what you want to be in black and white at the beginning of the prompt. In the image above, I listed a black and white photo of an adorable puppy at the beginning, then the colorized portion of the prompt.
The very first image generations were perfectly colored — and the few I created after out of curiosity. Puppies for everyone courtesy of MJ! Lol
Prompt for the image above:
black and white photo of an adorable puppy with royal+blue+bow, dynamic lighting, photo realistic, black and white photo, Canon EOS R5 --v 5

The image of the Charger took quite a few generations because I had a red glow on the ground from the tail lights.
To get to the image above, I kept generating images until there was one with less red where I didn’t want it while still having brightly lit tail lights. Then I generated versions of that image and continued the process until the end result you see here.
(I delete unwanted images in MJ so it’s not such a mess when I need to go hunting for an image later on!)
These Prompts did not work by simply listing blue bow or red tail lights. I had to join the words with + so Midjourney knew not to colorize whatever it wanted. (red+taillights, royal+blue+bow) (Though it did seem to try, especially with the last image!)
Prompt for the image above:
black and white photo of a Dodge Charger with red+tailights, dynamic lighting, photo realistic, black and white photo, Canon EOS R5 --v 5

While working on this image, AI added a touch of blue to the Robin at times. No Robin around here has blue on it!
At other times, the entire image was black and white and I deleted them as I found they continued to generate pure black and white images.
Some images had all blue eggs except one with a black and white Robin. These are the images I made variations of — choosing the egg placement I liked best. Not many image generations later, we had the image above.
Also, I tried speckled+blue+eggs and wasn’t happy with AI’s thoughts of what a speckled egg should look like.
Prompt for the image above:
black and white photo of a Robin standing by a nest of blue+eggs, dynamic lighting, photo realistic, black and white photo, Canon EOS R5 --v 5

This was the first image I created — and the one that gave me the most trouble with colorizing other objects.
Many beginning images colored the Ferrari red while the remainder of the image was in black and white. I also received many images where the car and the dress were red.
Hours later after tweaking and generating images, I had only the dress red. At this point, I was creating images so the lady looked good — no extra fingers, no body parts threatening to spill out of the dress, etc.
Maybe Midjourney had more trouble with this one because of the different aspects of the dress — short+tight+red+dress.
Prompt for the image above:
