Summary

The website content discusses the application of AI in creating images inspired by Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing pottery with gold, and showcases examples of AI-generated images using the Midjourney platform.

Abstract

The article delves into the concept of Kintsugi, a traditional Japanese technique that embraces the beauty of imperfection by mending broken ceramics with gold, silver, or platinum. It explores how this philosophy has been translated into AI-generated images through the Midjourney platform, resulting in captivating visuals that blend natural landscapes with the aesthetic of Kintsugi. The author shares their process of refining prompts to produce stunning images of turquoise rivers with gold-filled cracks in rocks and black rocks, as well as a dinosaur hatching from a Kintsugi egg and a black Freisian horse with Kintsugi details. The article also touches on the evolution of the Midjourney AI and the author's personal connection to horses. Additionally, it reflects on the creation of an exploding egg image, which, despite not turning out as expected, still captures the essence of Kintsugi art.

Opinions

  • The author finds the AI-generated images of Kintsugi art to be wall-worthy and stunning.
  • Persistence and re-wording of prompts are key to achieving the desired outcome in AI-generated images.
  • The author prefers the appearance of brush strokes in the images over photographic quality, indicating a preference for artistic interpretation over realism.
  • There is a personal fondness for horses, which influenced the choice to generate images of a black Freisian horse with Kintsugi details.
  • The author expresses a sense of wonder and fascination with the AI's ability to generate images, particularly noting the progress of the Midjourney AI since the beginning of their tutorials.
  • The author is intrigued by the concept of an exploding egg, drawing inspiration from a past experience of receiving a painted ostrich egg.
  • There is a hint of disappointment that the exploding egg images did not meet expectations, but the simplicity of the prompt still yielded beautiful results.
  • The author is curious about the internal process of the AI that led to the unexpected outcome of the exploding egg image.

Kintsugi art— secrets revealed!

Kintsugi gold-filled cracks in the rocks — AI image using Midjourney

What is Kintsugi? It is also known as kintsukuroi (or golden repair.) Kintsugi is the beautiful Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the broken areas with lacquer that is dusted or mixed with either powdered gold, silver, or platinum.

I can easily picture the above or the below image printed and hung on a wall. These are stunning images.

I am sharing two of my favorites as the second has a minor variation in the prompt that I thought would make the turquoise river and gold pop more.

The first kintsugi portion of the prompt is kintsugi gold-filled cracks in the rocks. I worded it this way because if kintsugi was only at the end, the entire image would have gold streaks, as you will see later.

Midjourney tinted some of the rock images turquoise to match the water. A little persistence, a little re-wording to see what worked, and we have a winner! Two actually!

The change I wanted for this image was for the rocks to be black.

These seem to have the appearance of brush strokes in the images. I did not code this to be photograph quality. If you want that, add, things to your prompt such as photorealistic and 32K.

There were variations, as in the first, that had thicker sections of gold. I didn’t have very many deep crevices filled with gold as this one was, and more what I had in my head.

Kintsugi Hatching Dinosaur — AI image using Midjourney

People seem to be fascinated by dragons and dinosaurs, which have quite a few similarities.

For this little fella (assuming it is little,) Midjourney seems to have made the dinosaur and the egg, both, kintsugi.

This was a relatively easy image to generate using dinosaur hatching out of a kintsugi egg. Several of the images had, maybe a head, or a head an leg outside of the shell.

As expected, some shells had more kintsugi detail than others.

There weren’t many generated images before this little one. I have my fully formed baby dinosaur to love and hug — until he bites my finger off!

Kintsugi Freisian Horse — AI image using Midjourney

I began generating the horse images with intricate detail and photorealistic in the prompt. The images were beautiful, but not how kintsugi should look. The horses had intricate, golden designs — not so much gold filled cracks.

Backing way off the prompt to simplify it to merely black Freisian horse, kintsugi, I immediately received beautiful images with only one horse having a distorted leg. Each full body shot included gold hooves. Flashy!

Why a Freisian? I love horses, grew up with them, one was my best friend for years, and they are just gorgeous creatures.

Midjourney has progressed by leaps and bounds since I’ve begun these tutorials.

Exploding egg — AI image using Midjourney

As I’ve stated in my Infinite Possibilities (image) Prompts, everyone loves a good explosion!

I actually thought of this idea because I was given a painted ostrich egg as a birthday gift many years ago. They are crazy big. Poor birds. LOL

These images had little to nothing exploding out of the egg. AI must have known that the eggs are emptied of their contents.

I also played a bit with a balloon filled with colorful powder. The explosions were cool but they weren’t all that beautiful to look at for kintsugi art. Kintsugi fireworks, surprisingly, didn’t turn out very exciting. That was a disappointment.

Again, we have a very simple prompt with high speed capture added for the beauty of the explosion.

I am curious how the inside of the egg got painted…
