Age of Empathy September Prompt: First Day
Share some ‘first day’ fear, excitement, woes, relief, or anything the words conjure up

A big happy end of August to all of our Age of Empathy essayists.
September, for many in the world, marks the beginning of a new school year. And with that comes plenty of new beginnings and first days.
So for the month ahead, I thought it would be a fascinating journey to explore this theme — the theme of starting something new. Whether your first day in a new job, your first day at a new school or university, your first day living in a new town or even country, your first day as a married person (Bernice P., I’m looking at you), or simply imagining what you might do differently if you started something over today.
Perhaps it’s taking your child to school for their first day, or their first day living away from home.
Let your mind and your words play with the theme. This is creative nonfiction, so the prompt is open for interpretation in any creative way you desire. It’s already giving me plenty of ideas and I hope it sparks a few with you too.
Use the tag/topic “First Day” to ensure your essay populates in the right place on the publication’s homepage.
Looking forward to seeing your submissions!
