Summary

The Medium platform has experienced a loss of user interactions, including comments, feedback, and the visibility of publications, following a frenzied period of user engagement driven by a hunt for followers.

Abstract

The article discusses a significant issue on Medium where user interactions, such as claps, comments, and feedback, have vanished, leaving publications without updates and a once vibrant community silent. This situation emerged after a competitive pursuit for the first hundred followers, which had sparked a flurry of activity and exchange among users at the end of 2021. The sudden disappearance of readers and their interactions, along with the stagnation of publications, has created an eerie silence, prompting comparisons to a detective story or a Hitchcock film. The news is sensational and detonates like a deafening explosion in the frozen silence of the world of Medium: there are no more claps and publications, the traces of the interactions have been lost.

To be exact, the disappearance of comments and feedback from the articles published on the well-known platform began in January, immediately after the end of the infamous hunt for 100 dreamers, as I called them, also known as Reader or vulgarly as followers.

That frantic search for the first hundred followers actually triggered a certain movement in the portal: a crazy exchange of pleasures and favors among users was ignited, especially in the last days of 2021, near to the end.

Then nothing. Not only have readers suddenly disappeared with their phrases and their likes but there is also a mysterious phenomenon that is affecting publications, as I mentioned earlier: here we almost enter the field of the detective novel, the thriller, the film noir to Hitchcock.

Many publications, in fact, no longer update their pages: this means that they are no longer reporting the articles proposed by users. I personally have looked at several “magazines” and I can say that there is probably more life on Mars: I was just unlucky or can you confirm? Indeed, on this occasion, I take the opportunity to ask: do you recommend publications in particular?

And so I find myself talking to myself and writing for my eyes only, like a lone swan in a desert oasis. Meanwhile, authorities and institutions continue to search for awake users, generous claps, surviving publications, and intelligent comments, while coroners are ready to draft the final report to certify Medium’s clinical death.
