Summary

The article re-evaluates the American Film Institute's (AFI) "10 Top 10: Animation" list through a critical and audience consensual assessment, revealing significant shifts in the rankings of classic animated films.

Abstract

The "AFI's 10 Top 10: Animation" list, which originally ranked the top animated films as determined by the American Film Institute, is critically examined in this article. The author employs a collective algorithm that incorporates feedback from both critics and audiences to reassess the AFI's rankings. The re-evaluation results in a new consensus ranking that differs notably from the AFI's original list. Films such as "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Pinocchio," which were highly ranked by AFI, experienced significant drops in the consensual ranking. Conversely, "Finding Nemo" and "Toy Story" saw substantial increases in their rankings, with "Toy Story" ultimately claiming the top spot in the consensual assessment. The article invites readers to consider how they would personally rank these iconic animated films in light of the new consensus.

Opinions

  • "Bambi" experienced the most significant drop in the consensual ranking, falling from AFI's 3rd place to 10th.
  • "Cinderella" maintained its position at 9th, aligning with AFI's ranking.
  • "Shrek" also retained its 8th position in the consensual ranking, matching AFI's placement.
  • "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" fell from 1st to 7th in the consensual ranking.
  • "Pinocchio" dropped from 2nd to 6th according to the consensual assessment.
  • "Fantasia" remained steady at 5th, consistent with AFI's ranking.
  • "Beauty and the Beast" rose from 7th to 4th in the consensual ranking.
  • "Finding Nemo" had the largest positive shift, climbing from 10th to 3rd.
  • "The Lion King" moved up from 4th to 2nd in the consensual ranking.
  • "Toy Story" experienced a significant increase, scaling from 6th to 1st in the consensual assessment.
  • The article suggests that critical and audience consensus can differ significantly from established rankings like those of the AFI.
