Affordable Ways to Mess Up With Your Mundane Reality
Experiment with no drugs, thus no cost for your wallet or health
Coffee is the only psychoactive drug I have ever used. I don’t want to use any money to buy some alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana. I am convinced that you can have strange feelings without any of those. At least, I’ve had. I’ve found ways to mess up with my reality with no cost and no physical health effects. Here are my tips. You’re welcome.
Be tired
Last weekend, I experienced a strange feeling. I was with my family, having a conversation with them. The peculiar feeling was, I felt like I wasn’t present. I felt like I was deep inside my mind, detached from reality. None of my family members realized there was something weird going on. After all, I was aware that my feeling of depersonalization wasn’t normal.
When I came home, I started to search for reasons for my odd experience. The only reason I found was sleep deprivation.
Spend time without human connections
I am a pure introvert. I know many other introverts. Thus, I can say this:
Introversion doesn’t equal the desire to be without human connections.
Typically, I wouldn’t recommend anyone to spend days without seeing anyone. In this case, when seeking to mess up with your mind, I do recommend it. Spending time with only yourself is a definite way to lose touch with reality. In my case, spending three days without connection to anyone is enough. It means not even sending messages on WhatsApp.
- Three days, talk only to yourself.
- Three days, only your thoughts are keeping you company.
- Three days, in your bubble.
There’s a fantastic channel, Mind field, on Youtube. They’ve done an intriguing video about social isolation. The host, Michael, decided to spend three days with no human interaction. It gets quite interesting.
Drink coffee
I said no drugs, but this is an exception. Many people indeed call coffee a drug. Coffee is on the list because it virtually costs nothing. It has no cost to your health either.
Still, coffee increases the activity of your mind. It affects your central nervous system, according to science. See this article if you want some research. Please remember that if you tend to use coffee daily, it won’t have the same effects as if you drank coffee in rare cases.
As coffee increases the activity of the mind, it changes your thinking. At least, it changes how I think. I feel that my ability to focus increases.
Watch mind-fuck movies
This way is my favorite. This week, I’ve watched three sci-fi movies. In case you want to mess up with your mind, I can recommend every one of them. I watched Matrix, Inception, and Slaughterhouse-Five.
- Matrix made me think that my reality might be a simulation.
- Inception made me think that my reality might be a dream.
- Slaughterhouse-Five made me think that my reality might be a memory or a future inside my insane mind.

Think about how your reality might not be The Reality
I was tired. I had been alone for days. I had been drinking more cups of coffee than usual and watching several mind-fuck movies. It wasn’t hard to come up with the following conclusion:
My reality is an illusion.
Even though it sounds insane, you cannot prove that you don’t live in a computer simulation rule by evil AI. I’ll write it again. There is a possibility that you live in a water tank, producing electricity for artificial intelligence monsters. There’s no way to prove that you aren’t.
There is no way to prove that your reality is what you see it is.
I know it sounds insane. Still, there is no way to prove that you aren’t sleeping. There is no way to do that. I remember I once tried to pinch myself in a dream. It didn’t wake me up.
Whatever you believe is real cannot be reliably proven.
Final thoughts
After I’ve been driving myself nuts for the last few days, I plan to spend some time with my friends. And if you decide to mess up with your reality, I recommend you to do the same thing. Sleep well, have a great time with your friends, stop overdosing caffeine and stop watching mind-fuck movies. Most importantly, stop thinking that your reality might not be what you believe it is. You don’t want to spend your time in the abyss of anxiety, uncertainty, and terror of the unknown for too long.
Sometimes it’s nice to take some time alone. There is only you, your thoughts, and the absurdness of life. But enough is enough. All of the things I mentioned cost virtually nothing in terms of money. They don’t cost anything to your health if tried for a short period.
Eventually, sleep deprivation isn’t healthy. Questioning the reality drives you crazy. Spending no time with humans makes you miserable. At some point, there are no more mind-fuck movies left to watch. And what about drinking too much coffee? Well, it makes you pee way more often than you wanted to.
