Affiliate Marketing Is Not A Get-Rich-Quick Method!
I’m tired of all these Instagram Reels, Tik Tok videos, and YouTube Shorts making false promises
Let’s answer perhaps the most pressing question that anyone who wants to make money online has, does affiliate marketing work?
The answer is an absolute yes.
However, like any entrepreneurial endeavor, it takes time, effort, patience, and belief to make it happen.
I will probably get hate from this, but I refuse to sit idle and watch video after video and post after post, oversimplifying how affiliate marketing works and how much work it takes to make a living from it.
Am I there yet? Not at all.
But now that I have embarked on this journey, I’ve learned there’s a lot more that needs to happen to start making money. Let alone make six figures.
Another reason I’m writing this is there are many hopeful people out there that right away believe in some of this information.
Should they do their due diligence? Of course. But we often make mistakes and are convinced right off the bat.
I’ve fallen into this trap once — I ended up wasting about $1,500.
Some of us are hopeful, and this is a beautiful thing, but we do need to be careful of the information that's put out there and the people behind it.
So for as long as necessary, I will share this message and communicate to people the realities of making money online.
Whether through affiliate marketing or other methods I’m familiar with or employ myself.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned through the past couple of months of research into affiliate marketing, different affiliate programs and networks, and studying those who are successful; there’s one thing that’s an absolute necessity — an established audience.
You need to build an audience and earn their trust before selling anything.
I’ve explained this before in another blog covering the basics of affiliate marketing:
I don’t think there’s much else that needs to be said.
The one thing I will say is this — building an audience takes TIME.
The people I’ve noticed have success with affiliate marketing are those who have taken the time and made the herculean effort to build an audience.
I say herculean because this usually takes months, typically YEARS of work.
If you’re not willing to invest this time, then affiliate marketing, or ANY method of making money online, will not work.
As wonderful as these opportunities are, you will not succeed if you expect to earn 5 to 6 figures immediately.
If you want that, you should look for a good ol’ JOB.
But if you’re truly committed to making this work, then now you know the number one foundational step for making money online.
BUILD AN AUDIENCE.
Here’s another important part of this step.
Build your audience in a niche or area of your interest. I cannot stress this enough, either.
If you want to last/survive in the online space, you need to dedicate yourself to a niche in which you have a genuine interest.
The reason I’ve stayed on Medium and keep fighting the good fight to hopefully earn more money on this platform is I genuinely like writing (I’ve been on Medium since April 2021).
It’s my favorite form of communication.
When I sit down at my desk and start typing, I enjoy the process. I don’t get tired or frustrated easily because I haven’t made the big bucks yet.
And to be honest, money is not the main reason I write.
My motivation behind writing is one, I believe I have something of value to offer that can help others, and two, I enjoy doing it — as I said before, you have to like what you’re doing.
In addition, I know I have potential and could one day make a decent chunk of change from this (I believe in what I have to offer).
I need to continue working, being consistent, and improving my skillset.
This is the kind of mindset you need to have if you’re going to pursue making money online, not just through affiliate marketing.
With the rise of these videos and content on social media promising that you’ll make thousands in a few weeks, those of us that know what the journey could look like for most people need to warn those that are entering the affiliate marketing space for the first time.
I wish I had someone tell me to think twice before purchasing a very expensive course that made me absolutely no money.
I wish someone had sat me down and had a real conversation about what making money online, either through affiliate marketing or any other method, entails.
You will only have the potential to succeed if you make this a long-term commitment.
And that’s not even a guarantee. You could be in the affiliate marketing space for years before you start making significant amounts of money.
Don’t get trapped in the false promise that you can make six figures in a few weeks and quit your job.
The people who make these kinds of claims, I wonder what else goes on behind the scenes since I don’t see them sharing much, or anything, about which networks they use, funnels, etc.
Remember, not everything is what it seems.
The same applies to people who claim they make hundreds of thousands from affiliate marketing and only started three months ago.
If you’ve had success with affiliate marketing, how long did it take before you saw significant success?
