Advantages of Living Off-Grid
And how rewarding this lifestyle can be
Have you ever wished for a more peaceful, rewarding, and cheaper way to live? Do you crave fresh air, clean water, and perhaps even solitude?
Are you tired of paying rent or priced out of the high cost of real estate? Or perhaps you own a home, and your mortgage payment and increasing property taxes are keeping you up at night.
What if you chose to ditch all that never to have an electric, water, or gas bill ever again? Imagine no more expensive visits from a plumber or noisy neighbors to tolerate.
Too good to be true?
Maybe you’re afraid of missing the creature comforts you’re accustomed to. You might have a spouse who fears the challenges of the outdoors. But I suspect, you may be curious about what it’s like to live off-grid and if it could work for you.
I’ll share with you how it works for me.
First, I was able to purchase oceanfront property in Maine at a fraction of the cost of traditional oceanfront homes. With location of utmost importance to me, I lucked out finding a cabin on ten acres with my own beach at an affordable price. My property taxes are ridiculously low.
With a wood stove, and a permit to cut firewood for free in a nearby forest, I have no heating costs each winter. The exercise each summer keeps me strong and fulfills me in a way I can’t describe.
Nature’s beauty surrounds me with each passing season, rejuvenating me with its healing power.
I obtain fresh, clean water from a nearby spring, and I also collect rain water, which is abundant here in Maine.
My life off the grid reveals the joy of simplicity and a realization of how little the majority of material things matter. I have everything I need with a Verizon jetpack for internet, a generator to power my Jackery power station, and solar panels.
And although my cabin is discreetly tucked in the woods, the grocery store is but a half-hour drive. And if I need to travel a bit further to Walmart and other shopping, I always return to my private retreat with a deep appreciation for my special home.
I might start a garden next summer and grow my favorite vegetables. Maybe I’ll get some chickens for their eggs. There are so many things I can do on my own land I love just thinking about it.
And this winter when the snowstorms arrive, I’ll stay warm by the fire with the free wood I cut, and listen to the wind howl. I’ll bake delicious chocolate chip cookies on the top of my stove and savor every bite, realizing how lucky I am to live here.
With the world becoming more dangerous and chaotic, I believe that having a safe hideout is a great idea, even if you don’t live there full time.
Maybe try the lifestyle, or ease into it. testing the waters, so to speak.
And if you’re like me, and discover how amazing life can be off-grid, your life will forever be changed. A peace will descend upon you and reveal a part of yourself you perhaps thought was lost.
As nature envelopes you within its arms, you will sense your true belonging. It will whisper its secrets and bring insight into your troubled mind, bringing to life whatever you held back before.
There is so much more I can write about this lifestyle, and how it has taught me about myself. I have discovered a beauty in simplicity that cannot be described, and a contentment with life as my thoughts are free to ponder.
I often find myself standing out in the woods thinking about nothing at all, wondering how is that possible? How can thinking about absolutely nothing be so enjoyable?
And that’s one of the rewarding secrets of off-grid life. The amazing power of simplicity will make you whole.
