Adult
a poem
We tell our kids To use their words
But neglect to use our own We tell our kids
Certain words are harmful Or not nice
And then laugh at them When they are used in jokes
What a farce What a tragedy
The player and the play I would rather talk to children
Than hear “adult conversation” Any day
Until adults can actually connect The dots between what they do and what they say
What they demand of kids and what They excuse in themselves
Count me out of it Adult should mean someone worthy
Of respect, of leadership Someone who cares and who puts children first
Adult should mean Mr. Rogers Bob Ross, LeVar
Adult should mean being aware Of how important
Kindness and compassion Justice and respectfulness are
And giving no excuse For things we let be labeled “adult”
Drinking, gambling, objectification and commodification of bodies as entertainment
Absolutely a sham Absolutely pathetic, really
Let adult mean goodness Let adult mean wise
Let adult mean someone worthy Of respect in the eyes
Of children And of peers
It is the only way we will ever truly Get out of here
This place of negativity and hate This place of oppression and grime
Adults using adult hearts adult words To clean up adult problems with adult awareness
Do what we ask of kids But do it big, and do it now
