Welcome back to my new series on retirement. I was glad to see that my first article was well received. For those of you who missed it here it is again:

Thanks to all the readers thus far. Retirement is a great thing but you must learn to adjust to it and embrace it. This week I am following my own advice and taking a break from routine. As any working person knows, this is important to mental health and well being. This is also true during retirement. As an added bonus see below for a short review of this vacation destination.

Routines are Hard to Break

Whether working or retired, we get stuck in routines, a.k.a. ruts. It’s just human nature. I know I get very comfortable in routines. It’s important, however, to change it up once in while. It’s just good for you personally and also for your relationship, if you have one. It renews the soul.

Just Do it!

My wife and I decided to take a trip to Ogunquit, Maine, USA to spend some time on the beach. This is one of our favorite destinations and due to the pandemic it’s been two years since we’ve been here. A great change of pace. Something to look forward to. Although we aren’t under the same stress as compared to when we were working and raising our children, traveling is still important to get you out of the house and thinking about different things. It is also good for your relationship.

Make a Plan

If travelling and staying in hotels isn’t in your budget, there are other ways to accomplish a vacation. One option is camping, which we have done a lot of in the past. Sleep in a tent or maybe you have a camper. We have done both. We spent many summers camping with the kids and exploring the Northeast and Eastern Canada.

Even local day trips are fun. Explore historical sites, waterfalls, hiking or biking trails. Or check out local eateries. It doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate.

You’ll Be Glad You Did

Anything worthwhile requires effort and planning. At least that’s what I believe. Getting ready for a vacation can be overwhelming in itself. I speak from experience as I tend to get overwhelmed. But the process of planning is good for you. It’s good to venture out of your comfort zone at times. Relax and your efforts will pay off. Once you get on vacation, you will realize that it was worth the upfront planning.

Ogunquit, Maine Vacation Summary

My wife and I have been here quite a few times. If you are looking for great beaches this is the place for you. The beaches are huge and can accommodate many people. This is good since this is an extremely popular destination. It can get quite busy, yet there is room to spread out. Getting to the beach early is a must however, if you want a parking spot. The water is cooler than Southern US beaches so be prepared for water temperatures around 70 degrees. Personally I find it refreshing.

Ogunquit has many good restaurants and hotels, however, the restaurants get very busy and most don’t take reservations. Better to go early for dinner. The seafood is to die for however. It is a great beach town, and although it’s busy, we have for the most part found people are very friendly.

Stay tuned for more articles involving retirement. My goal is for everyone to truly enjoy their retirement.
