Adjust Your First Thought to Change Your Day

We have over 6200 thoughts a day. But only one’s worth mentioning. And that’s the first.

The one you have the moment you wake up and realize that you’ve just woken up. When you’re awake, and you subconsciously think, “okay, I’m up, here’s how my day is going to go”.

And how your day goes depends almost entirely on how you think your day is going to go. Read that again. The idea for this article came to me when I noticed that, how I felt in the morning, was pretty much how I felt for the entire day. If I wake up tired. Then I’m tired all day. If I wake up full of energy, I’m energized the entire day.

“Whoever wins the hour, wins the day,” — Jim Kwik

Jim isn’t wrong. But I say, let’s go a step further. Whoever wins the first minute wins the day. When you learn to continually make the crucial tweak to your first thoughts, that’s what really kick starts your momentum and keeps you on track to success.

Monitor Your Thoughts

I know you’ve already heard this bullshit about monitoring your thoughts and being self-aware. But I’m not asking for much. I promise it’ll only take a minute.

Next time you wake up, and you’re out of the hazy phase, and you’re slumping out of bed. Take just one or two moments to tune in to your brain, notice what you’re thinking and feeling. Do you feel tired because you snoozed your alarm and think the day will have to be rushed?

Do you feel stressed because you were up late last night trying to finish a piece of homework that you didn’t even finish and now think you’ll fail at school? Or do you feel calm, excited, and ready to live out the day?

Know what your first thoughts are of the day, and either write them down or take a mental note of them. Don’t take my word for it, though. Try it yourself. See if the day goes similar to your first thought.

And when it does, realize that all you have to do to shift the course of your entire day is adjust your first defining thought.

Adjusting Your First Thought

If you’re like me, you can wake up and simply force yourself to think positively about the day. If that’s too hard, you can always write a cheesy positive affirmation. It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe in it; what you’re trying to do is convince yourself that today will be a good day.

Watch the Magic Unfold

In no time, you’ll get down the habit of constantly thinking positive about your day first thing in the morning. From there, your days, weeks, and months will lead you on the right path towards achieving your goals or whatever the hell it is you want.

I have been struggling to get down good study habits for years, which resulted in me always having late homework. But for the past month. I’ve been able to get all my assignments in early and have extra time to chill and write for you guys. And I credit this little tip for that.

Know that I’m not calling this a magic pill or a productivity guru lifestyle habit. It’s just a simple change with a big impact. And sometimes that’s all you need to do.
