Adidas CEO Gets Rumi’s Counsel In Sneaker Predicament!
Ancient wisdom still rings true

Back in 2022, following the mounting outcry over offensive and anti-Semitic remarks by the rapper Ye (formerly, Kanye West), Adidas promptly ended their partnership. The fiasco has led to an earnings outlook adjustment in which the company now may have to kiss goodbye $320 million worth of unsold Yeezy shoes.
Current CEO, Bjorn Gulden, who took the reins in January 2023, is now on a mission to guide the company to recovery from the loss of the once-successful super Yeezy line. Also according to him, the current Middle East situation has also prompted Adidas to initiate donation programs for the affected parts of the region. The company is, therefore, considering a third release of the line next year, with a view to turning the inventory into donations. The fate of the unsold Yeezys therefore, hangs in the balance, with different scenarios in play.
Well, Rumi may not have had Yeezys in mind when he said:
“Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth.” -Rumi
Translation: “Do not be satisfied with the kicks left on the shelf. Create your own sneaker legend!”
The post-breakup CEO can still take a cue from Rumi. Just as he urged us to create our own stories, it’s time to craft his own legendary sneaker saga. He shouldn’t feel bound by past strategies or decisions. He should forge a new path, innovate and adapt, take risks, challenge conventions, and create a new narrative for Adidas. Those unsold Yeezys? Dust them off and let them dance to their own new beat. And who knows, they might just usher in a new chapter of sneaker chicness! After all, Rumi didn’t say, “Stick to the script!"
