Adding Value

Listening to two women talking. “This is my third divorce Millie; how do you manage to still be married after so many years?”
I could hear the pain and regret in her voice as she tried to restrain her sniffles.
Millie sighed and I turned a 90 degrees angle to look as Millie hugged her and said, “Bev, I have two jobs. The first one is my marriage and I never stop working on it. My 9 to 5, stops when I step out of the office and starts when I step back in.”
Beverly eased out of her embrace, wipe her eyes with the back of her right hand and asked, “Are you saying that marriage is a job?”
“For me, it is. You and I have been working here for more than 30 years. We have been through downsizing and redundancy and we are still here because we add value to this establishment. I put the same value in my marriage, and it works for me.”
The silence caused me to turn another 90 degrees and the shock on Beverly’s face these words escaped from her mouth, “Oh God! That’s what Stephen said!” she wailed. “He said I didn’t value our relationship!”
Some of us are able to add value to everything we do in our lives, some of us aren’t. But if we take the time to know what’s important, then adding value to it would be easy. What do you add value to?
