A Hallowe’en tale, double drabble, and prompt response 🎃
This ‘double drabble’ (200-word story) is a response to my own spooky prompts (idea #6) at The Fiction Writer’s Den.
The prompt: Write a double-drabble involving a curse that changes a character’s fate. Perhaps they are cursed never to be restful in death, or with lycanthropy…? Or maybe they just have a really unlucky day one Hallowe’en!
“How much? Damn you. Damn you to hell.” The suit grudgingly paid and exited the cab, unaware of the whisper of elvish blood in her veins, or the old magicks that stirred at Hallowe’en.
Darren grunted and drove on, checking for his next hire. Another rude customer, and a long day ahead.
He turned, heading towards the freeway. There, he could make for Central Station. The hires tended to be longer, but he had time. It meant fewer customers to serve.
The freeway was strangely quiet, though, and as he drove, a dark red mist was rising over the city…
Sweating, panicking, Darren floored it. Was the city somehow on fire? Had a war broken out? He hit his exit, seeing people running. No — not people. Demonic creatures.
He zigzagged, somehow making it to the downtown streets. He knew the way, but nothing was familiar. Demons, flames, mist everywhere.
But… was that… yes! The suit from earlier. Her ears had elongated, and she was sword-fighting a ferocious orc.
Darren stopped the cab, recalling the angry curse. But as he approached, the elf-like figure was decapitated.
“Master,” said the orc, bowing to Darren. “You have returned to us at last.”
