Academic Writers Worldwide Can Find High Paying and Consistent Work With This ONE Website

A complete walkthrough of the application and what to expect moving forward

Photo by Patrick Tomasso on Unsplash

The number one problem for any freelance writer is finding reliable and high-paying income streams. You can’t have one without the other, balance is key. Luckily, I have found one website which offers just that to academic writers. Read on for the essential details to help you get approved and make the most of this site.

What is Studypool?

Studypool brands itself as a dynamic homework help club, with a huge marketplace connecting millions of students with online tutors. According to Studypool, they have 10s of millions of students all itching for answers to their school and college questions.

Don’t fret because you have seen the word tutor! This really is a writing gig. You won’t be expected to host a class on zoom. I will explain the exact requirements of the tutor in this article.

Studypool is ideal for former or current students. It gives you a way to earn money with all your hard-earned knowledge. It’s especially suited to academic writers because you will already have all the tools and skills required to excel.

Anyone can work for Studypool because they hire internationally. No matter your country of residence, you can apply to work for them. They also accept work in any language. If English isn’t your first language, it might actually be a benefit here!

When I first applied to the site, they claimed that a hard-working ‘tutor’ could earn up to $5000, but today I’ve noticed they have increased their estimations to a whooping 7.5K per month.

What work do they offer?

There are two main ways to earn money through Studypool (there are other ways, but they are not as well suited to academic writers, find more about those ways here). The first way is great because you are not required to do any of the applications. Yes, you read it right; you need not do any of the application processes and you can begin work immediately with Studypool. All they require is a few basic details and with no testing, you can earn money.

This is done by selling documents. Any educational document can be uploaded to the site and once approved (which usually takes a few hours) it’s available to earn money.

You can upload class notes, old assignments, tests, and quizzes, literally anything that will aid learning. The best part is you earn every time a student downloads it and there are millions of students on the site, so each document you upload can become evergreen.

This is especially great for former students who still have access to all their old work. If you aren’t this lucky, then you could start creating useful resources in your niche.

The second way to earn money with Studypool is by becoming a tutor for them. Your job as a tutor is simple. Every day, thousands of students ask questions on the Studypool forum. When questions in your niche pop up, you offer to answer them. This is known as bidding. You agree on a pre-set price and time frame to answer the question (the student decides the deadline).

Once you answer a question for a student, you can form a relationship with them. If you work well together, the student will want to work with you and just you from that point onwards, so they will offer work to you first.

Questions pop up every minute of every day, so you never have to worry. They also have an app that tutors can use while they are on the go to find viable questions to answer.

How much money do they pay and through what mediums?

Payment for selling documents to the site is up to $10. This means every time a student uses your resource, you could earn $10. Considering some documents get downloaded thousands of times, it can really add up.

Tutoring also varies. Each question has a unique price. Students will advertise a question with a guide price and you can bid higher or lower.

To give you an idea of what is possible on the site, check out the earnings of the best tutors.

One of the best things about Studypool is they have loads of ways to get paid. As you can see from the list below, there are plenty of options. I’m certain there is a viable option for everyone.

How do you apply to Studypool?

The application for Studypool is straightforward and simple. You click on the ‘Become a Tutor’ button, then on the ‘APPLY NOW’ button.

At this point, they will ask you for some basic information, including your name and email address, and you will be required to agree to the terms and conditions. All standard stuff.

Then the application begins. They have to be sure that you are up to the job of providing genuinely helpful and informative answers for their paying students.

Studypool claims that the application process takes 30 minutes to an hour, BUT it took me over 2 hours (and it paid off!). I like to be thorough and I really wanted to showcase my knowledge. This is super important with the Studypool application because if you do exceptional work they give you ‘badges’ (if you pass the application, but don’t provide exceptional work then you get a ‘new tutor badge’ if you do really well then they give you a ‘rising star’ badge) which shows students you are more experienced and knowledgeable and therefore you are more likely to get more students and make more money. Therefore, I recommend really taking your time and thinking it through. Rushing the application will cost you time and money later on.

Now you need to write a brief biography, just a paragraph or two. This helps show students what you’re about when they are choosing whether to work with you or not. You could say something like this,

Hey, I’m Jane. I studied Biology at King’s College. I have worked in both the private and public sectors and now I want to help students learn about what they love and fulfil their potential. Questions related to human anatomy, animal science or the natural world will be answered to the fullest. I look forward to working with you soon!

Studypool also use this to determine whether they want to work with you, so be sure to put some effort into it.

Next, you need to specify your rates.

You are required to select an hourly rate. You can choose anything from $10 to $150.

Now it’s the important part. In total, you need to answer three questions. For all three questions, you will need access to Microsoft Word so that you can correctly attach the file for review. You will also need Word so that you can provide answers and sell documents when you are active on the site.

For the first question, they will ask you to select a topic.

There are 12 categories you can choose from:

  • Law
  • Writing
  • Science
  • Economics
  • Mathematics
  • Foreign Languages
  • Business
  • Compuer Science
  • Humanities
  • Engineering
  • Health and Medical
  • Programming

Pick whichever topic you are strongest at. For me, it was health and medical.

My question was ‘What are the advantages and disadvantages of free health care?’

IMPORTANT NOTICE

They have a set of guidelines that writers must follow when answering questions. Most of it is pretty standard, they require the following:

  • Must be typed; handwritten answers will be rejected and result in an immediate decline of your application
  • Between 200–500 words
  • Must be free of plagiarism
  • Proper grammar and no spelling mistakes
  • Failing to meet our quality standards will result in rejected applications

But some requirements I found a bit odd…

They have a long set of punctuation, which writers must include within their answers. The list is comprised of the following:

  • Commas
  • Colons
  • Semicolons
  • Exclamations
  • Quote Marks
  • Apostrophes
  • Parentheses
  • Dashes
  • Hyphens
  • Citation in APA format (at least one resource)

I found this to be an excessive amount of punctuation to include in just 500 words. In the end, I used almost all of them (I think I omitted dashes because I couldn’t find a use for them within the content). Try your best with it, try not to focus on it too much. I think overall the actual content is more important, they just want to see that you have basic writing skills.

You will also notice the requirement for APA-style referencing. If (like me) your college or university used a different referencing style, then you can easily brush up on APA here. It’s fairly straightforward and shouldn’t take you too long to get your head around.

Finally, you must complete two further questions. You can pick from the same 12 topics again, but this time you have the added benefit of multiple questions available for each topic. For example, the topic of science (which I picked) gives you the options shown below.

CREDIT: Screenshot captured by author from studypool.com

Currently, there are five available questions for the topic of science. This is great because you can avoid questions that might not be well suited to you.

I had no chance with the synthetic forests question or animal mimicry, so I could avoid these and tackle the DNA and RNA question which is better aligned with my knowledge and experience.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT NOTICE

Studypool recommends you opt for a question from two subjects. This gives you two badges, one for each of the topics you answer a question in. This is super beneficial because you will be more appealing to students who are looking for help in those subjects. I have badges in science and health and medical and therefore I have an advantage with students studying in both fields. If I had only answered science questions, then I would have been limiting my reach.

Drawbacks?

Nothing in this life is perfect. This applies to writing jobs too. Although Studypool is a well-established and reputable organization, there is a small amount of bad behavior from some students.

Occasionally, students ask for refunds on work, which fulfilled their requirements, and sometimes Studypool grants these refunds. This isn’t overly common, but it happens. You need to be aware of it when you’re navigating the site.

One way you can avoid being stung is to make sure you check and consider the refund rate of the student. If a student has a refund rate above a certain percentage, Studypool will automatically notify you of this before you accept the question.

Other than that, you can consider the general ratings of the student. You can also aim to create relationships with students and avoid these problems altogether.
