The 2020 election came with many surprises. These surprises ultimately leading Joe Biden as the president-elect and Kamala Harris making groundbreaking history as the first female Black and South Asian Vice President-elect in the United States.

One of the most astonishing events that led to Biden’s win was the unexpecting ‘flip of the states’ in his favor. This is standard in elections, yet the weightlifting event in the final hours of counting ballots. Unexpected red states becoming blue and vice versa. Let us highlight today the proud state of Georgia as one of the flips from red, to blue. Because of the flip, we can thank Stacey Abrams. Abrams’ work supporting this election is far from unnoticed, celebrities and politicians alike across the country are praising Abrams with her efforts. Abrams push led Biden to lead in Georgia, a state with 16 electoral votes, to 49.5% opposed to Trump’s 49.2%. This is thrilling for Georgia since the state had been red for decades and hadn’t voted for a Democratic president since 1992 with former President Bill Clinton.

A Little Backstory Of The Push Behind Georgia

I am more than honored to shed a light on the beacon of power that is, Stacey Yvonne Abrams. Abrams is a former Democratic Georgia Governor Nominee, non-profit CEO, lawyer, political leader, voters right’s activist. One of five children, Abrams grew up in the town of Gulfport, Mississippi. Abrams claims her parents taught her three things that became the building blocks to her character: going to church, going to school, and taking care of others. During her childhood, her parents decided to move Abrams and her siblings to Georgia for a better education. It was there her parents attended Emory University to study Divinity, while she and her siblings attended a highschool in Dekalb County. After graduating highschool Abrams attends Spelman University, University of Texas, and Yale Law School. Abrams has gone on to make many notable achievements. Her most famous achievement to date, her decade long efforts to fight voter oppression.

Abrams is no stranger to making history and being a symbol of power for our little girls to look up to. Abrams is the first black woman to become a gubernatorial nominee in the United States. She is the first African American woman to lead in the House of Representatives. She is also the first black woman and Georgian to deliver a speech in response to The State of The Union.

I truly admire the work Abrams has done for the people of Georgia, as well as the inspiration that she has given to the entire South. This is a quote from an article I have found of Abrams regarding her advocation for voter rights. I believe this quote sums up perfectly the drive Abrams has to increase the quality of the Democratic vote in Georgia. Though the trail that has been blazed has been a long one, there is still much work to be done, and Abrams is well aware.

Abram’s Name Is Behind Many Projects In Georgia, Including Founding Her Own Organizations.

Despite her loss in the race for governor, she took the failure as an opportunity to bring to light an issue of voter oppression in her communities of color. With this, she founded an organization called FairFight. The FairFight program entails a vote training program to ensure every American has a voice in the election system. Abrams hires young people of color to represent the program to discuss social issues on the state and national levels as well as voter registration and protection. In 2020 Abrams launched FairCount, a census program. Every citizen must count to make every vote count. Another program founded by Abrams is the Southern Economic Advancement Project. The SEAP is a policy that will “Build bridges and innovative change and progress to the South.” Essentially, this is an initiative to expand equity in economic power throughout the South. During the election, I heard Abrams’ name on the television as well as social media outlets. I thought to myself, “Where do I know this woman? I know this name, but how do I know this woman?”Because shamefully, I did not initially recognize her from politics. I did my research and realized: this is the author Stacey Abrams!Her books range from romance fiction, her early work in the early 2000s to non-fiction books. I plan to pick up her latest book, Our Time Is Now. Our Time Is Now is A New York Times Bestseller. This book empowers the reader to engage in systems that reflect a world in which all voices are heard.

Before my twenties, I was not someone who involved myself in the topic of politics. This was because I was young and often told that my opinion did not matter. I am still someone who is learning more about politics. We no longer have the capacity to be young and ignorant in this country. The leaders of this day are teaching us this as each day passes. We are given this information and must do what we can. Stacey Abrams is a leader advocating for uniting her communities to develop a New Georgia. One that is equal for everyone. It is inspiring to see another woman of color with the power moves she has made for her state.
