Abra-cadabra — It’s A Cat!

Six Word Photo Story Challenge: Freestyle

No spectral presence — it’s a cat.

This is Abra. She lived with a friend who shared her life with cats for many years. When our friend was diagnosed with MND/ALS a year ago, she had just three cats — an elderly mother and two daughters. Abra is one of the daughters.

The various cats we’ve known over the course of a friendship of 40 years have differed in sociability and temperament, but Abra stood out for her refusal to interact with anyone other than *her* person. It wasn’t just that we weren’t allowed to stroke her, we weren’t allowed to set eyes upon her. Sometimes when we arrived, a grey blur would flash past, the catflap would open and close with a clatter as though a ghost had zipped through, and that would be all I ever saw of Abra.

Sadly, Abra’s person died just before Christmas. Abra and her sister were rehomed and I went to see them this weekend. Not only did Abra deign to greet me, but she also allowed herself to be stroked and she posed for a photo. It turns out she’s not an ephemeral fast-moving grey spectral presence; she’s a solid black and white cat.

On behalf of our friend, Abra’s person, I’m putting on record how pleased I am to see how miraculously well Abra and her sister have settled in their new home.

I wrote a Haiku about Abra’s mother back in August:
