About Rules of Thumb

A poem

Photo by Victoria Priessnitz on Unsplash

Did you know that rules of thumb were said to be based on the rule that measured the tool a man could use to beat his wife?

Do you still say you will kill two birds with one stone? I wonder if that stone has to be bigger than the stick or if there’s a trick to knocking off those birds with that rock.

I heard a time or two that I would look prettier if I smiled. Well, hell, yeah, so would you. So would the bird. Even that rock maybe wrapped in a sock would look more friendly with a smile. So would we all. So would the wife afraid for her life and being beaten with that stick.

These days I use tools to build, not to break. I feed two birds with one piece of bread, instead of knocking them on the head and I smile while I’m smashing the patriarchy with those sticks and stones.
