About Me — Yvonne
Who am I and why do I write?

Dear reader, thank you so much for clicking on this article!
Maybe you’re one of my loyal followers (I am infinitely grateful for you all) or are waiting to become one :)
Welcome to my elongated ‘About page’ with some interesting and slightly random facts!
Here’s a short overview of this article:
- Why am I studying Medicine? (I am currently a fourth-year medical student in Germany :)
- Why am I writing on Medium? (my journey on Medium started in February 2023 :)
- Basketball (one of the hobbies I enjoy most!)
- A long-distance relationship (Distance: Berlin — Prague)

Why am I studying Medicine?
First things first, it took me a while until I was sure I was even going to study medicine.
I thought about it early on…
Along with many other possibilities.
In high school, I had a phase in which I was sure that I was NOT going to study medicine.
For a certain time, I was fixated on architecture! I think I’d probably also be happy if I had chosen that path.
It’s interesting to see how certain decisions can influence our future paths so much.
Especially in school times, I was a very hard-working student and I thought that if I continued like this in Med school, I would burn out by the age of 20.
And now, here I am: not (quite) burnt out and studying medicine.
So why am I studying medicine?
This might sound generic, but I want to help others.
All the situations that I’ve seen and been in to date in different hospital departments have strengthened my will to continue my studies and become a doctor.
During the COVID pandemic, I was working in the German healthcare department.
Among other things, I was doing COVID tests and calling people in quarantine -> so if you were in Berlin at the time, I might’ve called you!
If you want to know more, I did write an article specifically about Experiencing the COVID-19 Pandemic as a Medical Student in Germany
Why am I writing on Medium?
Writing is and has been for a long time, a passion and a way to express my feelings.
Some people do well in explaining things when speaking.
But for me, I find it easier to express myself on paper.
Having the chance to reflect.
It all started when I was in the hospital, having too much time to think… and to worry, which lead me to write about my experience and thoughts at the time.

Then, there’s also the possibility of earning money on Medium.
As a student studying abroad, it’s very helpful to earn even a little money on the side.
The first cents that I earned are summarized in this article:
Earning my First Pennies on Medium!
However, Medium is far from a “get rich quick” website for new writers.
It takes a lot of work and effort to build an audience, and consistency.
It’s not an easy path!
Basketball
One of my favorite hobbies is basketball.
And I got into it thanks to my brother.
He started playing basketball first and at the time, I often watched with my parents, or even kept the score for matches!
It didn’t take long until I also started playing and it has stuck with me since.
And, I do play basketball despite being fairly small XD
I think that sports are a great factor contributing to a healthy work-life balance and also combating the lack of exercise, which, in my opinion, has been even more problematic since the pandemic and home office / online classes.
A long-distance relationship
For more than a year now, I’ve beenn happily in a long-distance relationship.
Not that the long-distance is the ‘happy’ part,
but the relationship part. And my significant other.
We’ve known each other for very very very long — since pre-school.
But it took a loooong while for us to get together.
Even more so, I’m unbelievably happy that we did!
Because this is a topic that I think about a lot and often, I also like writing about it.
Long-distance relationships can be difficult, but are also becoming more and more common.
