About Me — Teresa Morillas

Zealous Health Activist. A vivid example of how contradictions coexist in one’s body.

When it comes to talking about me, I cringe. Almost literally. Yet here I am, MEDIUM!

Born (in the ’70s) and raised on the southeastern coast of Spain (Andalusia), that is, “oozing with Andalusian essence,” I never lacked passion and spontaneity as a child. So little did I know back then that I would hide these two natural qualities for decades to ‘fit in ‘…

…But that’s another story…

The ‘official’ part of me

✶ Lived in Madrid (Spain) for over 15 years and moved to Zurich (Switzerland) in 2014

✶Studied Food Engineering, AND Agronomy, AND got a Master in Supply Chain Management AND another Master in Advanced Studies in Nutrition and Health, AND got Certified as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, AND studied Psychology of Eating, AND… (the list goes on and on)…

Yes, studying is an ingrained part of me… and I love it, yet there was a time when I even apologized for it. (Another story?)

✶ Worked more than 15 years optimizing processes in the Food industry, teaching at the university, and a few years for the Pharma industry

Until one day, around my forties, my body screamed, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!” in the form of severely compromised gut health and autoimmune disorder — one of the rare types.

“Lucky me!” I moaned back to myself then.

However, that forced full stop was the second most significant turning point in my life. The first one goes back to my late twenties when I canceled my wedding and left my fiancé two months before the event (certainly, another story, what makes three…😅).

My professional pivoting point and current project

In 2017, after almost two decades of working in large corporations, I packed up my gear and started my journey as a Nutritional Counselor, Health Coach, and “Solopreneur.”

The result was my signature project: Your Life on a Plate.

In it, I accompany people to restore their physical and emotional health by making peace with their ‘plates’ (i.e., their relationship with food), their bodies, their symptoms, their lifestyle, and, in most cases, their inner values.

Both challenging and tremendously satisfying in equal parts!

I LOVE IT!!!

Why MEDIUM? Why writing? About what? Why now?

A few reasons:

  1. Teaching, writing, and sharing what I continuously learn are certainly on the top 3 of an almost endless list of passions and interests since... yeah, you got it! Since I was a kid ;).
  2. I have decided to (re)reclaim the passionate and spontaneous girl, kidnapped upon entering puberty, and liberate her from the fear of not fitting in.
  3. Life is too short to waste time thinking, “I should have started earlier... I’m too old.” At least, I want to cling to that belief.

I want to write about gut health, hormonal health, immunity, aging, inflammation, emotional eating, the heart-gut-brain connection, and how stress and anxiety wreak havoc on our physical and mental health…

I also love debunking nutritional myths and translating the “ivory-tower-like scientific language” to one that is easily accessible, so we can all make better-informed decisions about our health.

And, who am I beyond those professional layers?

I am 99% human, 0.5% sunflower, 0.5% lizard. That non-human 1% showed up after I moved to Switzerland — call it Epigenetics ;) — when I realized that I swiveled the chair on the balcony following the sun’s rays, l-i-t-e-r-a-l-l-y…

Those of you who have been in Switzerland from November to February know what I’m talking about!

My curiosity is virtually endless, but not everything catches my attention.

I love learning about the Human body and its Physiology, Medicine, the Mind, History, Anthropology, Sociology, Greek mythology, and its mind-boggling connection to our modern psyche…

I do not believe it because it is trendy; I do my best not to talk by hearsay. At least, I try to.

I am a relentless researcher of the body and the human psyche. Not easily persuaded by headlines, I enjoy dissecting information from different angles until I find the perspective that makes “click” (to me, at least).

I am slow as a mammoth in stilettos when I wake up, but I become unstoppable during the day when I find the “what for” or the “for whom.”

❀ A long time ago, an extraordinary human being called me “emotional Sherpa.” Little did I know then about how great and naturally I would apply that trait to my current career path as a nutritional counselor. So I honor him with this paragraph -and photo-.

❀ Another nickname? “Alpine goat.” I must admit that I’ve earned that badge for frequently lacing up my boots and hiking uphill over 3,000 meters: the higher and the steeper, the better. It gives me perspective and helps me release that “hot steam” that would otherwise turn into anxiety or boiling anger.

Thank you, Swiss Alps, for igniting that part of me!

I am passionate about animals, especially dogs, birds, and my new friends -and neighbors- cows. Living around them has taught me a lot about being present and about loving without words.

❀ I spend most of my day with a permanent “Playlist” in the background.

From Bach to Muse, from African drums to Ludovico Eunadi, going through (almost) every style, Reggaeton excluded -everyone has their limits-.

Conversations, moments, landscapes, walks, books excerpts, mental notes… I add a “Soundtrack” to virtually everything! ♫

And yes, I see myself from time to time singing out loud or dancing under the tune of a flamenco song or some African drums… the enthusiastic little girl takes the stage when she’s home alone 😉
