I’m 1.95m tall, I write books and I can fly. (One of these statements may be false)

Allow myself to introduce… myself.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰𝘀: I’m Phil, a writer and coach from the UK. I live in Las Palmas, Spain. And yes, I really am 1.95m tall (6'5"), but no, I don’t play basketball.

𝗠𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲: I’m a deep thinker who likes philosophical conversations, sunny weather and crisps. At least once a day, I go for a long walk and also enjoy swimming in the ocean (because I got banned from the municipal swimming pool). On weekends, I visit the mountains to get out of the city. Having said that, sometimes there’s nothing better than staying in with a good book. My all time favourite is Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino.

If I were an animal, I’d definitely be a cat (but one who can read and possibly fly).

𝗠𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: I’ve played the guitar for twenty years and used to be in a band in London. One dish I can cook to perfection is red lentil dal (but I mostly like eating crisps). Also, as I’m a quiz master at a local bar, I’m great at remembering useless facts.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: The moment I started writing stories, there was never a question about whether I’d continue. It’s something I’ll do for the rest of my life. Maybe that’s true for you too. Perhaps we have both stared at a blank page, have both suffered rejection, and have both struggled with self-doubt.

My content writing covers articles on language, literature, and writing craft on Medium and LinkedIn, but I’m a short-fiction writer at heart. Although I’m still learning tough lessons along the way, I’m thankful that I’ve had three books published and have a fourth in the pipeline for 2024.

I love helping multilingual writers share what they have got to say. I think discrimination against ‘non-native’ writers is total ‘bullshirt’, so my mission is to help freelancers and writing pros build proficiency in English and writing authority. Seeing my clients’ work in print gives me just as much joy as holding my own books (…okay, almost as much).

How did I end up here?

A few months ago, I wrote a longer article on my road to my current iteration, but I can give you a quick recap here:

  1. I studied history and learned to write essays.
  2. After five years of working in advertising, I had a quarter-life crisis and decided to travel around the world.
  3. I became a language learner (and teacher). Living and working in Argentina, Mexico, Spain and parts of Asia, I met incredible people who changed my perspective on life. So, I started to write about it.
  4. I quit my teaching job in Spain and started working for myself. My path to running a digital business has been a long one, but I’m always motivated to ‘go to work’ (a.k.a. open my computer).

I call myself a coach because my experience helps get the best out of multilingual writers.

A typical day for me involves running courses, meeting with clients, marketing my business, and editing others’ work. Somehow, I manage to squeeze in a bit of me time too.
