About Me — Marlene Alexander
I’ve been writing on Medium for some months, so I thought it was about time to formally introduce myself. Everything I do is based on my faith as a Christian. I write from experience about relationships, particularly the marriage relationship, and about my faith in God.
Family
I lost my one and only love, John, more than 4 years ago at this writing. We were contentedly married for over 40 years, which I think gives me the right to offer advice on that subject. Hardly a day goes by when I don’t think about the way he changed my life for the better and helped me to become more like the person God intended me to be.
Together, we raised two talented and successful kids, a son and a daughter. They continue to be a source of great pride and happiness for me.
Pets
I love all animals and nature in general. I’ve had 3 dogs and a cat over the years. Currently, I’m a cat mom to a “torti with ‘tude” named Aggie.
My daughter thinks my cat’s a little crazy and I can’t disagree but Aggie is mine and I am fully hers. She’s a great source of joy to me.
Collections
Like many people, I collect stuff. I have a fondness for all things Victorian and miniatures. I have a collection of pens, from the feathered variety to glass calligraphy pens, to a couple of intricately carved wood pens from Mexico.
Travel Experience
I enjoy travelling and have been to British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and Nova Scotia in my own country, as well as California, Florida and Texas in the U.S.. My dream trip was to England, where my roots are. I have also visited Mexico where my younger brother and his wife have been living for the past 6 years.
Writing Experience
I began writing in earnest in my 30’s. I’ve written for newspapers and magazines and spent a few years as a blogger for an AOL blog called WalletPop, which was created to help people save money. I was brought on board through my personal blog, Dollar Store Style and was dubbed The Dollar Store Diva by the editors there.
I’ve written a children’s book and am working on a novel.
My Personal Blog
My dollar store blog was begun in 2006. I loved to decorate but couldn’t afford to shop at places like Pier One, so I took items from dollar stores and created small, decorative pieces and seasonal items for my home with them. I’m still blogging on dollarstorestyle.com. If you have a similar desire to decorate while saving money, check it out. I enjoy decorating and am a cautious maximalist. I love my stuff but I also value neatness and order. Balance, in all areas of my life, makes me happy.
My Goals
Medium gives me a chance to write what’s on my heart. I’m particularly hoping to hone my skills as an essayist here.
