About Me — Maria Garcia

A storyteller who is a story in production

Picture of the author.

“All of these lines across my face Tell you the story of who I am So many stories of where I’ve been And how I got to where I am But these stories don’t mean anything When you’ve got no one to tell them to It’s true, I was made for you”

The Story, Brandi Carlile

Hi friend. Yes, the you Brandi is referring to is you, sweet reader on Medium. Also, I know what you’re thinking, I’m 28, how many lines do I really have on my face? The answer is enough, for now.

If I had to describe myself through song lyrics (I don’t have to, I just want to), at this moment in time, I would go with this:

I don’t know, where to begin”, so sometimes I just “listen to the wind/To the wind of my soul.” My imagination is my faithful companion, and as a result, “I am an architect of days that haven't happened yet.” When I get stuck, I remind myself that “nobody wins afraid of losin’/And the hard roads are the ones worth choosing.” But still, I sometimes wonder, “can the child within my heart rise above?/Can I sail through the changing ocean tides?/Can I handle the seasons of my life?”

In other words, I am a wanderer, and I wonder. And if anything, you have some new music to listen to or some old jams to reminisce to.

On a less abstract note, I am Portuguese but grew up around the world — from Washington D.C to New York, to The Netherlands, and South Africa. I’m back home now, rooted in the soil I was planted in, but really I am always everywhere. Somewhere in the wind.

I studied Psychology in my BA and then did a master's in Psychology of Intercultural Relations. In a less academic setting, I sing, I write music, I write stories and poetry, and I write thoughts. I’m not one thing, I am the sum of my parts. A project-oriented lifestyle would be the dream for me, where I could blend helping others with creativity.

Currently, apart from writing here on Medium, I do some teaching and workshop coordinating. I am also working on a music project, a project in the field of psychology, and another project in the area of education. Projects, projects, projects!

At the end of the day, I am an artist and storyteller at heart. The point is really to live in a constant flux of stories. And then to share those stories, and connect through them. So here I am, doing just that.

My Niche Is Connecting Through Creativity

I have no idea what my niche is, even though it's advised that you have one. I like writing about many topics, including self-development, spirituality, writing, education, music, psychology, and random things that make me laugh.

To make up for my lack of niche, I created a catalog of my articles, so it’s easier to find something that you might enjoy.

My Publications

I am also the owner of two publications here on Medium:

Mind in the Gap

A space for stories that bridge together intergenerational perspectives. If you would like to contribute, check out the submission guidelines here.

A-Culturated

A space for all the readers and writers in between cultures. If you would like to contribute, check out the submission guidelines here.
