Self-adulation is underrated!
About Me — JoAnn Ryan
The OSM (Original Social Misfit)
Writing about one’s self can be difficult can’t it? I’ve gotten used to writing candidly about myself and my many assorted mental defects on my blog, MidnightHarmony.com (recently changed to The Sunstone Journal.) However, writing an About Me article here on Medium is a whole ‘nother kind of beast. First impressions are important!
Let’s see…

I grew up near the mighty Snake River in the middle of nowhere surrounded by gravel roads and potato fields as far as the eye could see. I absolutely hated it then, and these days much prefer city life, but now that I’ve been away for many years, I often find myself dreaming of it.
I was raised in a cult. Relatively speaking, it was a pretty tame cult but it was still a cult and thus much of my upbringing turned out to be a sham. It’s ok. It taught me to be tough and always think for myself.
Our childhoods have such a profound effect on our lives, don’t they? Guides our thinking and clouds our thinking in both good and bad ways. You can’t ever truly be rid of it — best just to make peace with it and channel it into building a better future! Easy to say, not so easy to do.

On writing
Saying that I love writing is kinda silly isn’t it? I’m here and I have a blog so of course I love writing! Earning an English degree was a huge accomplishment for me but hurling words out into the real world… well now, that’s the true test of a writer’s ability!
Dealing with real life
Lately my time has been consumed by my domestic partner’s struggles with alcoholism. I reached the point of giving up entirely and was ready to jump ship when he tossed out an old weather-worn but sturdy board and finally admitted he had a big problem. Next came detox and now… well, that chapter is currently being written. I do hope it comes out well.
Happy to be here!
I’m so looking forward to getting to know all the peeps here! There are so many interesting and wonderful people on this planet… the true tragedy is that there’s just never enough time to get to know every single one… I’m talking about the interesting and wonderful people here. The liars, cheaters, scammers, manipulators, wife-beaters, thieves, murderers and all other crazy-dangerous psychopaths can all just fuck off!
My main writing focus is on finding happiness in the real world, which usually centers on journeys, mental health and everything related.
