A Terrifyingly Terrific Transformational Tale

Image Created from Selfie and The Google FaceApp

I supposed I should start by saying I’m not a fan of this process. But introspection has never been a strong suit of mine, despite the relatively active internal life I now lead. But you didn’t stop by to hear me complain about something I must have done eventually, right? Hopefully, I will remember to delete this paragraph when I’m done… It wouldn’t due for you to think I’m any sort of a rabble-rouser, would it?

Who Is Jenny Starr?

Well, I tried to write this article once and didn’t get very far, let’s see…

That served a very nervous girl who didn’t feel like she would be accepted into a world full of writers without a boat load of degrees, or a few dozen books worth of experience…

Then I tried to write about how I think, and how I like to dance when I’m troubled…

But Who Is Jenny Really?

Well, dear hearts, that book has not been written yet (although copious notes have been taken). I am a transgender woman, who formally started her journey last fall with HRT and therapy. My therapist noticed that I liked to talk out my ideas (a “whack-a-moler” was the phrase I think I got, for how I jump from place to place) so she suggested writing. I found Medium, and Queerly Trans shortly after. KP_the_writer was my first writing muse, encouraging me to create after noticing all the longer-than-necessary replies I would drop on their articles. My first article was that intro back on 10/31/22.

My First Topic — LGBTQ

Well, I started with a lot of writing on LGBTQ, where I was going on my transition, what I had done, how it affected my life, etc. This has continued to be a focus during my transition to poetry but hasn’t been a priority, per se. Although a lot of poems are about the transition. I’m putting together a list of these articles here:

When I started my journey, I was a full-on trans woman, she/her pronouns, 100% on the girl train (Sapphic only, pls!). But, like with many changes, this has evolved over time. Especially after talking with my inner child, Jinny, who now tells me they are ENBY and likes to be called Jinn at times — so we are going by she/they for the time being. I look forward to exploring this in the future.

My Second Topic — Poetry

This was a surprise — I can poet!!! Like a lot, a hella lot!!! I started writing poetry at the beginning of the year, after reading something from my first poetry muse, JD Greyson, at Move Me Poetry. This became my haven for all things poetry, up until recently everything has gone into that space to be read and reviewed by a very kind and loving community of poets and poetry fans. I present my catalog of these writings here:

Poetry has become my go-to for all matters of the heart. When it comes to expressing angst, and the highs and lows of life, its my go-to. (I only wish I had paid a bit more attention in English class now…). I can genuinely say now, that I can write poetry about any topic I feel for. Which has been very liberating for me as a writer.

My Third Topic — Finding Myself

This is perhaps the real reason I’m here. To understand who I am with respect to my spirituality and my sexuality. These traits have less to do with being trans than with being human, but we do add some nuances that are unique to our group. HRT (hormone replacement therapy) means neutralizing one hormone (for a male to female transition that is testosterone) and replacing it with estrogen. This feminizes the male body but takes time (several years) and how exactly it affects each of us is different (well, the manifestation is different) So I am learning how to respond as a woman to romantic queues, sensual experiences, and intimacy as a Sapphic, demi-sexual, polyamorists, switch…

My spirituality is changing too. I spend the majority of my life as a devout Christian. And while still believing in God, my understanding of her is changing, and the way I hear from God, and the myriad of other beings that populate our world and the next continues to evolve. So I started a series on my spiritual life and will continue to explore that as well…

Last Call, Who Is Jenny?

I am a complex being of light, learning my way in this wonderful experience we call life. I’m learning new things, trying to unlearn old things, and sharing my experiences. I will laugh, cry, bleed, and do all the things we all do, but always moving towards the goal of being the best Jenny I can be. You will learn about my hobbies, my passions, my insights, and my loves. But most of all, you will learn about another human being, and how we all are, at the core, looking for the same thing — to celebrate every moment of life as we are learning to become our best selves, to love, to care, to connect, and to be.
