About Me — Jacqueline Jannotta

Why I write on Medium

Photo by Thought Catalog on Unsplash

My writing stems from a fundamental belief in “becoming better.” While I recognize that our world is struggling with dysfunction and turmoil, I also know there are pathways to something better, and that it’s up to us to pave the way. That’s why my pieces on Medium aim to offer hopeful ways to think about a topic, helpful suggestions, or potential solutions to a problem.

Like many writers, I focus on personal stories and connect them to a bigger theme, such as:

♦ a conversation with my grandfather that taught me about economics;

♦ the challenges of motherhood as my daughter leaves the nest;

♦ or the rage after an election that sparked my social activism.

One of my favorite throughlines is to explore ethnicity, race and cultural identity, among the many ways we understand ourselves and each other. This includes a deep dive into genealogy, which is part of a lifelong discovery about how deeply we’re all connected.

Fascination with those interconnections also led to a yearlong family adventure living in Italy. The re-set of living overseas was so powerful that I wrote a book, as a guide for others to create their own life-changing experience abroad.

On Medium, I offer a selection of tips from my award-winning book Let’s Leave the Country! for those who dream of spending extended time abroad — because I truly believe that if more people broke out of their cultural bubbles the world would be a better place.
