About Me — Emma Ryan

Introduction

Hello! My name’s Emma and I’m a twenty-six-year-old writer. I’m a huge bookworm, David Attenborough’s number one fan, and I will geek out over any dog I see on the street.

I graduated from university with a degree in War Studies, and have worked in numerous jobs since including being a librarian and working in the TV and film industry.

I’ve been writing on Medium since October 2021, but only recently became a full-time freelance writer as of February 2022. Big leaps, but exciting ones! On Medium, I write mostly about books, video games, entertainment, and lifestyle.

I used to always say I was a reader, not a writer — truthfully, I was just shy and never thought I could put my work out there. It’s still scary, but my confidence is growing each day. My grandma inspired me tremendously (and continues to do so), and quitting my job was definitely the most reckless and brave thing I’ve ever done. But it was absolutely the right decision, and I don’t regret it one bit.

I live in England and spend my days writing, reading, playing video games, watching TV, and enjoying the sunshine (whenever it appears in the UK!). When I’m not writing on Medium, I work on writing content and proofreading for several clients.

My Favourite Things

I can never pick one favourite, so…

  • Favourite books: I’ve probably re-read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline the most. In terms of other fiction books, I love The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Tidal Zone by Sarah Moss, The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead, The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham, and The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari, Dead Wake by Erik Larson, East West Street by Philippe Sands, Know My Name by Chanel Miller, and Educated by Tara Westover are some of my favourite non-fiction reads.
  • Favourite TV shows: I’m obsessed with The Office (US), and have probably watched each episode 20 times. I also love Band of Brothers, The West Wing, Normal People, Euphoria, and Succession.
  • Favourite films: Jurassic Park, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Dead Poets Society, Little Miss Sunshine, Apollo 13, Lord of the Rings trilogy, 1917, Whiplash, The Mummy (1999), Howl’s Moving Castle, You’ve Got Mail, and Singin’ in the Rain.
