Abstract

We miss her every day.

I used to go full moon surfing when we lived in Hawaii. It’s the most terrifying and exhilarating thing I’ve ever done. About Me — Courtney River

27 years old/Massachusetts/mom/wife/writer

Quick facts:

• I grew up in a very small, very cold town in northern Montana
• I have a giant hammerhead shark tattoo on my foot and ankle, so I probably wouldn’t mess with me if I were you.
• I don’t like the gym — I prefer outdoor hobbies that keep me in shape like hiking, biking, walking, and surfing. Plus I’m constantly lifting a toddler!
• I have a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) and a Bachelor’s in International Business with a minor in both economics and the Chinese language.
• I studied Chinese language (mandarin) during all 4 years of my undergraduate degree and even studied abroad in China twice. 我很喜欢学中文!

• I have had to memorize far too many zip codes. I’ve lived in Montana, Ohio, Hawaii, California, and Massachusetts just as an adult. Newbie to the east coast!
• My son is my world 🌎 I never knew I wanted to be a mom until I became one.
• I also love being pregnant — I realize I’m very lucky. I am currently 6 months pregnant with a little girl. I would consider being a surrogate for a family member or close friend in the future!
• Iced americano is my caffeinated drink of choice. Black, of course. If you’d like to buy me a coffee, I’d be eternally grateful.
• My favorite author is Pearl S. Buck — The Good Earth changed the way I think about life. You should give it a read and report back to me.
• My husband is 18 years older than me and we’ve been together for almost 10 years. We met when I was working as a cashier at a Wal-mart in Montana. Total ‘meet cute’ material.

• We had a dog named Pickles who joined us on our travels for 9 years. She sadly passed away earlier this year and we haven’t been complete ever since.

• We adopted her from the pound after dating for only a month. She was a lost dog roaming around the wild streets of Montana and needed a home. The three of us did everything together and she traveled everywhere we did. We miss her every day.
• I used to go full moon surfing when we lived in Hawaii. It’s the most terrifying and exhilarating thing I’ve ever done. Something about being in the ocean at night is so calming yet nightmare-inducing at the same time.
• Painting, drawing, and playing the ukulele are my favorite activities to unwind (when I find the time).
• I love a good Sauvignon Blanc, but I couldn’t tell you the difference between a $6 and a $100 bottle.
• We recently bought a house in Massachusetts and are having a lot of fun renovating it ourselves — I’m very lucky to have a very handy husband.
• I really love to refurbish old furniture.
• When it comes to dinner, I’m quick to make a decision. I know what I want, and it’s probably Thai food. Yellow curry is the best thing to have ever existed.

I’m so excited to finally be getting back into freelance writing and being creative in a new way. Motherhood can be very isolating and lonely, so writing creates a great outlet for me to express myself and connect with others.
