Summary

Julius Evans discusses the contentious issue of abortion rights, emphasizing the long-standing debate and the extreme actions taken by some, while advocating for a woman's right to choose.

Abstract

Julius Evans revisits the topic of abortion rights, which he first addressed in the mid-1990s during his tenure as a columnist in Georgia. He reflects on the intensified conflict between pro-choice and pro-life groups, highlighting the tragic outcomes, including the murder of abortion providers. Evans argues that the decision to terminate a pregnancy should rest with the pregnant woman, who best understands her circumstances. He criticizes the logic behind violent acts committed in the name of anti-abortion beliefs, pointing out the hypocrisy and extremism within certain fa

Abortion — Whose Rights Are They Anyway?

It’s Time We Get This Straight, Society

Women have always had a choice when it comes to abortion. Some legal, some not. Photo by Duané Viljoen from Pexels.

I first wrote about abortion rights in the 1994–95 timeframe. Back then, I was a locally syndicated columnist for several newspapers in the Atlanta, GA region. The papers I wrote for spread out as far as Douglassville, to Kennesaw, to Dekalb even all the way out to Clayton County. Man, I covered Georgia like a small glove trying to fit onto OJ’s hand. lol.

I know it was in 1994 because that was the year of Unity ’94 held at the Georgia World Congress Center.

Here’s a side note. The thing about having a lot of stories on this platform is, I sometimes come across points I want to make that I have made before and published in another article. But for the life of me, I can’t find that freaking article I wrote it in. Doesn’t matter if I use lists or some kind of keyword search protocol. I still just can’t find these previous articles. So, I’ll write the point again.

Sometimes, you just don’t know which way to turn. Or, where to find past published articles. Photo by Dids from Pexels.

I absolutely cannot believe the furor that has been brewing for the past several years over abortions. Things seem to have gotten a bit out of control with the pro-choice and pro-life groups.

People are taking other peoples’ lives over the right to choose. Who would better know the financial ability to care for an expected child than the pregnant mother?

Abortion should not be used as a means of birth control. There are so many different types of contraceptives available in the pharmaceutical marketplace, the number is staggering. Some include the pill, the Inter Uterine Device (long-term birth control inserts), condoms, spermicides and on and on. Let’s not forget abstinence.

If couples use birth control improperly, it stands to reason they should bear the cost of either caring for the child or legally terminating the pregnancy. But people not close to the situation have no right to interject their opinion on either decision. For that’s a decision the couple will have to live with the rest of their lives.

Many different arguments have surfaced as ‘good reasons’ to abort or not. But the ultimate decision rests, as well it should, with the expecting mother whether the pregnancy will go to term.

I can’t imagine how a person could conjure the idea of stopping abortions by killing abortion doctors. But I guess nothing in today’s society should surprise us.

When I originally wrote about this topic, Paul Jennings Hill had just murdered two people on July 29, 1994. According to Wikipedia, Hill was a minister and an anti-abortion extremist who murdered abortion provider physician John Britton and his bodyguard, James Barrett. Here’s another reason you can say this abortion debate is no joke. In 1994, Hill was sentenced to death by lethal injection, and guess what. The sentence was carried out nine years later. When does that happen in the United States? Most death row inmates spend at least 10 years on the row, and more than half spend almost 20 years on death row. What this says to me is if you get caught up in certain criminal cycles, i.e., hate crimes, abortion, LGBTQ crimes, etc., your ass will be going down quick, fast, and in a hurry.

While Hill was alive, and incarcerated, he developed a following — a fan club, if you will, consisting of other prolife fanatics. These people are like “Karen” on steroids.

Another example from back during this time frame was Reverend Mike Brey of Bowie, MD, right down the street from where I live. Well, not RIGHT down the street, but in the same state. I’ve been to Bowie before. Brey said he not only believes abortions are wrong but killing the people who perform abortions is justifiable. Where is the logic here? It’s like he’s taking a long trip without luggage. And to use the clothe of God as a pedestal for his twisted philosophy is sick.

I watched a short TikTok video yesterday touting the four countries that are uninvadable. The United States leads the way. And why not? It says we have 330 million people and the number of guns we own far outnumbers that figure. What this meant is that an invading country wouldn’t have to just deal with the United States military, but all of us gun-toting, former military members, militia members, ex-cop wannabes, the old fart brigade, the young guns, the gang bangers. Yeah, you thought the British had it bad when they came over and faced the farming brigade, let an invading force try that shit today. It ain’t happening. But then again, we also have the crazies out there too, like the abortion-rights activists who will quickly turn their guns on our most prized professionals. You KNOW they will be down with taking out a couple of bad guys from foreign, invading countries too.

But back to my point. If you are driving down street and come upon a section of the road where a bridge is out, would you keep driving? No. More than likely, you would stop. What’s wrong with a woman stopping a pregnancy before plunging her life and the unborn child’s future into an empty pit? It’s certainly better to stop the car before it goes off the deep end, wouldn’t you agree?

The people who complain about poverty levels throughout the United States are the same people who advocate killing abortion doctors. They protest in front of abortion clinics and stalk the doctors who perform abortions. Don’t they have anything better to do with their time?

We need to stop forcing our views and ways of thinking on other people who have the same right to their own opinions. If a woman can’t choose to terminate a pregnancy, for whatever reason, what should we expect next? Will someone enter our home and tell us what we can and cannot watch on television? Seems that’s what we are coming to.

When preachers turn to killing doctors, two very highly regarded professions, I think we are just about at ton verge of the revelation.
