Introducing GitHub Copilot X: The Ultimate AI Pair Programmer
Over the past several years, GitHub has been at the forefront of innovation in software development. GitHub has been exploring the use of large language models and their potential to transform the way developers work.
The result of that exploration is GitHub Copilot, the world’s first at-scale generative AI development tool, which has already written 46% of code and helps developers code up to 55% faster.
But Copilot is just getting started. GitHub’s R&D team is excited to introduce GitHub Copilot X, GitHub’s vision for the future of AI-powered software development.
In this article, we’ll dive into the new features that come with Copilot X, including chat and voice interfaces, pull request support, and the adoption of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. We’ll also discuss how these features can fundamentally redefine developer productivity and enable every developer to focus their creativity on building the innovation of tomorrow.
Introducing GitHub Copilot X
GitHub Copilot X is the next evolution of Copilot, expanding its capabilities across the entire development life-cycle. Copilot X aims to be a readily accessible AI assistant throughout the development process, leveraging AI to automate tasks and make complex work easier.
The AI features GitHub is introducing include:
Chat Interface
GitHub is bringing a chat interface to the editor to provide an even more personalized developer experience. GitHub Copilot Chat is deeply embedded into the IDE, recognizing what code a developer has typed and what error messages are shown.
Developers can get in-depth analysis and explanations of what code blocks are intended to do, generate unit tests, and even get proposed fixes to bugs.
GitHub Copilot Chat builds upon the work done with ChatGPT, which Microsoft and OpenAI have been working on and will be integrated with VS Code and Visual Studio. GitHub is also introducing GitHub Copilot Voice, where developers can verbally give natural language prompts.

Pull Request Support
GitHub Copilot X will provide AI-generated descriptions for pull requests, based on OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. These descriptions will be created through a GitHub app that organization admins and individual repository owners can install to support AI-powered tags in pull request descriptions, which are automatically filled out by GitHub Copilot X based on the changed code.
Developers can then review or modify the suggested description. This will help streamline the pull request process and reduce the need for manual input from developers.
Documentation Support
GitHub Copilot X is introducing GitHub Copilot for Docs, an experimental tool that uses a chat interface to provide users with AI-generated responses to questions about documentation.
GitHub is starting with documentation for React, Azure Docs, and MDN, so GitHub can learn and iterate quickly with developers and users of these projects.
GitHub is also working to bring this functionality to any organization’s repositories and internal documentation, making it easier for developers to get answers to their questions and improve their workflow.
Command Line Interface (CLI)
GitHub Copilot CLI will provide suggestions for commands and loops, helping developers navigate the terminal more quickly and efficiently.
OpenAI’s GPT-4 Model
The adoption of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model is a major step forward for GitHub Copilot X. With GPT-4, Copilot X will have even more advanced capabilities, including logical reasoning and code generation. By leveraging this technology, GitHub Copilot X will be able to understand more of a developer’s codebase, offering more tailored suggestions in pull requests and better summations of documentation.
The Future of AI-Powered Software Development
GitHub Copilot X represents the next era of software development. By automating tasks and reducing the need for manual input, developers can focus their creativity on building what really matters: game-changing software that drives innovation and accelerates human progress.
As GitHub continues to innovate and update the heart of GitHub Copilot — the AI pair programmer — GitHub is excited to see what the future holds. GitHub Copilot X is just the beginning of a new generation of more productive, fulfilled, and happy developers who will ship better software for everyone.
