Summary

Celeste Wilson shares her experience of finding a Zentangle book at a thrift store, which inspired her to create a new pen and ink design, reflecting on the meditative aspect of the art form.

Abstract

Celeste Wilson, an artist and writer, recounts the joy of discovering a Zentangle design book while thrifting. Despite her bookshelf being full, she couldn't resist purchasing the book for $1.00. The book's unique approach to using Zentangle patterns within recognizable shapes intrigued her, as she had previously only used Zentangle in abstract art. She experimented with symmetry in her artwork, using a light pencil grid to guide her, and found the process to be meditative, requiring focus and concentration. The project provided her with a moment of happiness and creative fulfillment, and she plans to share more of her work online.

I Love Thrifting

I love thrifting because it’s a different experience every time. You never know what you’re walking toward and you don’t know what you’ll go home with.

On my last thrift foraging adventure, I found a book with Zentangle designs and drawings using Zentangle patterns. I’ve only ever used Zentangle in abstract drawings but the idea of using it as part recognizable shape is new. I haven’t tried but will get to it eventually.

I really don’t need another book on my bookshelf but I bought it anyway. I’m so happy I did. It inspired me to try another pen and ink design.

Here is the $1.00 book.

It’s a Form of Meditation

I’ve often said that I don’t plan art designs. I just go for it, but when symmetry is involved, you have to plan a little.

I lightly drew a pencil grid on the page which I could later erase. It guided me throughout the design. I’m not great at symmetry, so I goofed up here and there.

There is a level of meditation that goes into this type of artwork. You have to focus on it to ensure that you mirror one side to the other. It holds your thoughts ransom for a few moments.

I suppose this would be an artistic way of unplugging while you figure out how to replicate a circle, a squiggle, or a teardrop shape on the opposite side of the page.

I’m grateful for the inspiration and enjoyed a pen and ink project again. I have no plans for this piece of art. It served as a happy moment and that is enough.
