Abstract

The author reflects on their most successful Medium article from a year ago, which was featured in The Ascent. The central theme of the article is the need to shift from a consumption-driven lifestyle to one that prioritizes creation. The author points out that society is wired to consume content effortlessly, whether it's through streaming services, social media, or even reading without applying the knowledge. The article suggests that to truly create, one must actively reduce the intake of information and focus on producing original work. This involves making deliberate changes to one's environment to minimize distractions and promote creativity, such as using tools like Cold Turkey Writer or Life Log, and even deleting distracting apps. The author advocates for turning down external noise to amplify one's own creative signal.

A year ago I wrote my most successful article on Medium. It was the first article I got into The Ascent.

The main point was: Create more than you consume.

We’re programmed to consume. It’s so easy to watch Netflix, hang on Twitter, or “read” books but do nothing with the knowledge.

We’re info junkies.

The world is just built that way now.

We need to get out of the matrix

Cut the cord. Get out of the stream and do anything meaningful. Don’t just turn off notifications. Delete the apps.

Turn down the noise and turn up the signal. Your signal

We have to structure our creators’ environment so that it’s impossible not to create.

The only time I’m actually writing is when I’m in Cold Turkey Writer or on Life Log.

Everything else, honestly, is usually a distraction.

Create. Don’t consume.
