Summary

A writer reflects on the challenges of balancing creative aspirations with the constraints of time and energy, acknowledging the limitations and the need to prioritize to avoid burnout.

Abstract

This week, the writer, Tannille, grapples with the complexities of time management amidst various commitments, including personal training, household chores, and writing goals. Despite aiming to post three articles a week and progress on a novel and a serial, Tannille acknowledges the impracticality of accomplishing everything due to the constraints of time and energy. The Muse, a metaphor for the writer's creative inspiration, resists limitation, but Tannille recognizes that overextension can lead to burnout, as experienced in the previous year. A bout of sniffles, possibly hay fever or COVID, further disrupts plans, leading to a missed Friday post. However, Tannille turns this setback into a reflective piece, marking it as a victory by posting on Sunday instead. The writer concludes by planning for the upcoming week and invites feedback on their musings, noting the ever-changing nature of their writing journey.

Opinions

  • There is a sense of frustration and disappointment in not being able to meet all self-imposed writing goals.
  • The Muse is personified as a childlike entity that desires freedom and creativity without bounds.
  • The writer expresses a clear understanding that trying to do everything is unsustainable and leads to burnout, referencing a previous year marred by a lack of joy and motivation.
  • There is a pragmatic acceptance of limitations, with the writer choosing to celebrate small victories, like posting on Sunday instead of the intended Friday.
  • The writer values reflection and uses their journal as a tool to track changes and growth in their writing process.
  • Despite the challenges, there is an underlying optimism and determination to continue planning and striving for balance in the week ahead.

A Writer’s Musings: The Muse vs Time

Balancing Passion and Reality

Like sands through the hourglass, these are the days of our lives. Photo by Immo Wegmann on Unsplash

This week in Tannille World, there were issues surrounding the pesky thing called time management. A new physio block started up again, or as I like to call it, PT (personal training is way sexier). Working on those Britney Spears abs. PT says to work harder.

The house needed cleaning and then there were the joys of other life commitments. I dropped the ball this week and forgot to put a food order in because my head is everywhere. Literally — thanks to The Muse, she’s been acting like a kid in a toy store. The juggle of life and energy is challenging.

On the writing side of life;

  • I want to post 3 times a week. And this week looks like this; Monday ✅, Wednesday ✅, Friday ❌.
  • I want to get back into my novel world, The ImmorTales. It sort of happened, I flung shiz at the screen (normal people would call it brainstorming).
  • I want to write a serial. Hello, the rabbit hole of research.
  • I want to go to my writers’ group.

See the glaring issue? Sometimes we want to do so many things. Try new things. But we can’t. We’re all a slave to time and energy. The Muse is throwing a tantrum. She doesn’t like to be reined in. I am faced with the reminder — I can’t do everything. Trying to do everything leads to burnout. And I learnt my lesson with 2022 being the year of nothing gives me joy. Burnout = Muse death.

As it turns out, I have the sniffles. Hay fever most likely. Nothing major. But these days we can’t rule out our dear friend, COVID. Instead of infecting my writer friends, I stayed home and freed up my Sunday to play catch-up.

And here I am rambling like Eeyore.

SLAM DUNK — this is my 3rd post this week. Just a writer’s musing. Nothing special. It’s not the Friday post I wanted, but an unexpected Sunday night dribble. And damn it, my weeks start on a Monday. I’m taking this micro victory. Happy dance.

Now, please excuse me I have to go plan for next week.

If you enjoy my musings let me know. I usually log my week in my writing journal as a reflective tool. Here’s my last one… My, my how everything changes.
