A Word for the New Year
Using a Word of the Year to Help Focus Your Attention and Energy
Seasons change. People change. Life changes.
One thing remains consistent. Every January 1st, a New Year begins.
I’ve never been much of a New Year’s Eve reveler. The most I’ve ever celebrated ringing in the New Year was the years my boys were finally old enough to stay awake. We’d spend the evening snacking and drinking hot cider. Then, as the midnight hour approached, we’d join the countdown out in the front yard, banging on pots and pans with glee.
The years after that phase passed found me tucked into bed long before the changing of the guard between the old man and the young child.
But yet, anticipating and embracing the new year is always one of my favorite delights. The joy of a fresh new year beckons to me. I meet it with new dreams, new goals, and an attitude of fresh enthusiasm.
The past four or five years, I’ve entered the new year in a new fashion. I’ve chosen a ‘Word of the Year’ to focus on in the upcoming 365-days.
A ‘Word of the Year’ is one that you choose. It should encapsulate something you need more of, an issue you want to focus on, or a concern you’d like to improve on.
Last year, my word was ‘energy’. I don’t recall some of the other words I’ve used. Fortunately, thanks to a blog post I did, I can look back and see what words I chose for 2018. Yes — words — plural. I couldn’t decide between three, so I picked all three — authentic, action, and joyful.
What will my word for 2023 be? We’re still a few days away from the new year’s grand entrance. I haven’t decided yet. There are so many words worthy of attention for a whole year. Right now, my list is narrowed down to these twenty possibilities:
Love, Boldness, Self-care, Health, Hope, Flow, Happiness, Kindness, Inspire, Accept, Journey, Laughter, Positivity, Connect, De-clutter, Family, Adventure, Possibilities, Bloom, Balance.
But no — as I type this list that I’ve been debating about over the past few weeks, I’ve narrowed it down to 5.
— Inspire
— Positivity
— Bloom
— Joyful (adding this to the final five from my 2018 words)
— Release (Taking the de-clutter from the list, but changing it to ‘release’ as it can then mean releasing physical items in a de-cluttering manner, OR releasing some of the mental/emotional things that are holding me back because I won’t let go of them)
I’d better make up my mind. 2023 is almost here. I need to decide so I can plaster this word about in my world.
Post-it notes, journal covers, screensavers, notes tucked around the house with reckless abandon — you name it, I drop these reminders all about my daily space.
What about you If you were choosing a ‘Word of the Year’, what would your word be?
