A Winning Boss Is One Who Is Calm

An angry boss loses it all

I entered an office where the boss was screaming at his assistant. What the hell is wrong I thought? Was I not given the appointment for 11 AM? Have I entered the wrong office? He was shouting and the whole atmosphere was bad.

The man saw me and realized that I was looking dubiously at him. He suddenly smiled and welcomed me and the whole mood changed.

This was not the only experience that I had. I am sure you saw such angry people at work too. What did you feel? I am sure you were not comfortable.

I have seen many bosses shouting and their assistants absolutely shivering in front of them and behind their back jeering at them or saying he always shouts and most of the time without reason. He never listens to what we have to say and makes up his mind.

This made me think that there must be some traits of top leaders as to why they are successful. What is it that they do to make reach where they are? These bosses are usually calm because they have their strategies planned out.

“A business leader must be the eye of the storm, the human equivalent of Alka-Seltzer: a central calming influence that is even more critical when an organization goes through a transition, challenges, or change.” John Addison

Five ways in which a boss can be calm and win

To be calm the boss must do several things in an office:

#1.Office etiquettes: One of the techniques to be maintained by all is to have certain principles of working in an organization. The office etiquette should be to talk and greet people with courtesy. Every staff member should speak to each other in a proper tone and the boss should also maintain the same.

My question is Why should someone be shouted at? Why can people not control their voice and their emotions and talk rationally?

Office etiquettes should be followed so that employees are happy and give their best:

Kristen Hadeed, founder and CEO of Student Maid “attributes happy customers to happy employees. She is a firm believer in the power of giving her employees purpose, freedom, ownership, and recognition as a way to engage people to do their best work”

#2. Clear and effective communication: The success of a business organization is that the boss gives clear directions by communicating properly with everyone. If the work has been explained clearly there will be no doubt and the performance of the employee will be much better.

In the office where I worked, the director-general met the immediate departmental heads every day over coffee and would discuss concerns and issues through a two-way interaction where all the issues were congenially discussed. We never had a problem with him.

#3. Delegation of work: When a boss delegates the work effectively. He remains calm. Some bosses who start as entrepreneurs have become habituated to doing all the work themselves. They like to hold everything together by doing and not delegating the work. Such bosses are restless and not calm and do not like the work done by others. There is a constant rift in the office and the boss spoils it all with a rough exterior.

A calm boss will have a great team with proper delegation of work and an angry boss will not know how to delegate and will shout his top off affecting productivity.

#4. Giving credit to people: Bosses who give credit to people working with them always have a wonderful team to support them. Every person likes to be appreciated when good work is done by them. A boss who is humble will never feel out of place having happy people working with him. He will in fact get value from them when he appreciates people and it will make the team grow together.

A great way to motivate people is to appreciate their work. It motivates the entire team. Who gains? The boss himself as he wins with good work and enhanced productivity from his team.

Jeff Bezos said “I’m not just talking about business things,” he said. “It’s like, ‘I love that person and I never told them,’ and you know, 50 years later you’re like, ‘Why didn’t I tell her? Why didn’t I go after it?’

#5. Vision and Mission: Every member of the team in an office should be apprised by the boss of the vision and the mission of the organization. The goals should be clearly outlined so that every member of the team is able to perform accordingly.

The organization should be transparent. All policies should be discussed and there should be a good staff program clearly outlined regarding their rewards and remuneration. A good welfare policy looking into the needs of the team members will help in attaining the vision and mission of the company.

Once the vision, mission is attained and the goals fulfilled the boss will remain calm and collected. There will be higher productivity.

The takeaways?

  • Connect with team members: A boss should be approachable and connect with people by listening to the other side of the story from his team members. This will keep him calm.
  • Build trust: The boss should build trust with his team members by not indulging in gossip and listening to one against the other. The divide and rule policy does not work well because it creates distrust.
  • Motivate people: Team members should be encouraged to do their work. Constant nagging is not good. Too much criticism is also not appreciated. However, balanced and properly analyzed feedback is important so that the team members do not neglect their work.
  • Feel secure: A boss who suffers from insecurity can never feel calm and satisfied. He will always distrust the work done by people and shout at them and be angry. He should have faith in the people who work with him to keep him in a calm mental state and achieve greater heights.

To conclude

A boss must remain calm by making his team complementary to the work that he has delegated to them.

Each person should have clear lines of communication so that the work is understood and communication should be encouraged through the two-way connect method.

Appreciation and constructive criticism helps. There should be informal get to gethers where people meet and get to know each other well.

A boss who is calm when dealing with his team will be the ultimate winner in future.
