A Windy Walk on the Santa Monica Pier

Beachgoers don’t mind winter or the wind —Poetry

On a blustery, frigid February afternoon, our family visited Southern California. We decided to walk on the Santa Monica Pier, although our teenage kids pouted stronger than the Santa Ana winds that hissed and whistled at us from all directions.

As the clouds puffed up their chests edged by a clear, chilly sky and met the white-ridged waves, the seagulls swarmed in the swift sand as the waves retreated. The sand — a blinding tornado left us squinting in the sun, while we admired the waves cresting in a never-ending crescendo of dreams - a mirror of heaven and earth.

My husband and I never know what reactions we get from our teenage children, which makes spending time together so wonderful and even mysterious. It has been like this since they were little, and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

I feel that our memories are like clouds that puff up their chests, for we tend to enhance them and create new stories around our experiences, but one thing is for sure: my husband and I relish our children’s reactions to new foods, places, and events.

And that blustery, frigid February afternoon was no exception.

I enjoyed reading Emily Gibson’s evocative poem Life-Size Snow Globe and her wonderful comparisons and images. I could almost taste the snowflakes like salt on French fries, as Emily beautifully describes in her poem.
