Summary

The author reflects on the origin and significance of their nicknames, "Skunk" and "Lucy," given by their parents, and how these names have shaped their identity and memories.

Abstract

In a personal narrative, the author recounts the challenge of writing about their nicknames, a task prompted by friends on Medium. They share two nicknames: "Skunk," affectionately bestowed by their father, and "Lucy," given by their mother. The author cherishes these names as symbols of their parents' love and unique senses of humor. Despite not knowing why their father chose "Skunk," the author fondly recalls it as a term of endearment. Similarly, "Lucy" remains a favorite, with a recent nickname, "L," given by Gerald Washington, also holding special meaning. The author expresses gratitude for these monikers and the memories attached to them, tagging several friends to share their own nickname stories.

Opinions

  • The author values the nicknames given by their parents, viewing them as terms of endearment rather than mere labels.
  • The father's sense of humor is remembered fondly, and his choice of the nickname "Skunk" is seen as an expression of his love, not a negative comment.
  • The author feels a strong connection to their mother through the nickname "Lucy," reminiscing about a childhood sign that read "Lucy's Room."
  • The recent nickname "L," given by a friend, is also appreciated, indicating an ongoing tradition of nicknaming in the author's life.
  • There is a sense of nostalgia and loss regarding the author's father, as they miss him and his humor.
  • The author's choice to go by "Lu" instead of "Luanne" reflects a personal preference and a shift in identity during their teenage years.
  • By tagging friends and inviting them to share their nickname stories, the author demonstrates a sense of community and shared experience on the Medium platform.

A “What’s your Nickname?” challenge:

My photo

Last night, I was challenged by two of the USUAL SUSPECTS that I enjoy reading here on medium.

As I was beginning to think about my nicknames, I also realized that a nickname is usually given to us by someone we admire.

So that is what I am basing this story on…my two nicknames below:

The first one is what my dad called me. “Skunk” …yes, you read that right.

He used to call me that and it was said in love. I have no idea WHY he chose it for me.

But I could tell that he didn’t think I stink. :)

It was a term of endearment. Dad was the best and I miss him still. He had a wonderful quiet sense of humor and could make me laugh so easily. My dear friend Diana Pippin remembers my dad and I bet she will agree on his humor. And my dad was a very kind man.

Thank you, dad, for giving me that nickname.

Dad named all three of us kids. I’m not sure why mom didn’t have a say in that. I don’t think I want to know. :)

Dad named me Lu Anne. I was the youngest of the three kids. I remember asking him once or twice where in the world he got my name, but he never told me. He named my brother after his uncle. And he named my sister after a famous song.

I now choose to go by “Lu” (except on Facebook) and early in my teenage years I dropped the middle name: Anne, and I had a hard time getting my church friends to stop putting it together (Luanne)…

My other Nickname was given to me by my mom.

It was “Lucy”.

I still really like that nickname. (However, my latest nickname is from Gerald Washington…He calls me “L” and I call him “G". And we are both good with it. (I think…? let me know below in the comments, G)

I used to have a small ceramic plaque on my bedroom door that said, “Lucy’s Room”.

I wish I still had that sign.

Thank you, mom, for giving me that sweet nickname.
